Do electric Toothbrushes really make a difference?

Are they worth it?

I've always looked after my teeth - never had a filling, never miss brushing my teeth. However as I'm getting older my teeth are definitely discolouring, and thinking about what I can do to increase the care I give them.

Would an electric toothbrush be worth the investment? Are they really that much better than normal Toothbrushes?

I have had a range of electric brushes over the years. My £40ish oral-b one was okay but I didn't notice a massive difference and found the brush head harsh on my gums.

Then I got a Phillips Sonicare electric brush in the Amazon sale in January and I genuinely can't rave about it enough. My teeth are SO much whiter and it feels like a hygenist level of clean every time I use it. They can be pricey when not in the sale but I will never go back! I am currently seeing my dentist every month as I have Invisalign and she has commented on the difference to my teeth since Jan.

Look up "Ordo". I think they're around £40 and they're great. It's what I'm using right now. They sell them online on their own website but also in sainsburys, Superdrug and a few other places.

They look really interesting, is it smooth when switched on, my Oral B one is starting to feel like it rattles in my mouth it is pretty old now.

To clean teeth properly with manual you have yo doo "full hand strokes, spend at least ..... minutes" yada yadda and I just can't be consistently good with it somehow (cutting it too short most of the time). With electric ones, or at least with mine, you have sound/vibration indicator that this side is done, move over to the next, and I find it easier to be consistent and thorough with electric.

Yes teeth get much cleaner and over time with whitener toothpaste I think brighter too.

For me they're great as I have sensitive teeth and that really improved using an electric toothbrush compared to a manual one for some reason.

Thanks all.

Just looking into a few things after your comments. For those who mentioned the philips sonicare, what's the difference in the 2 in the screenshot below? Is the price difference worth it / is the cheaper one just as effective?

I am 39 and have used an electric toothbrush since I was 16. No fillings or dental issues ever.

I mean, that could have been the case if I used a manual all these years, but I doubt it.

@Cindy1802 I’ve just bought the higher priced one as I need to have a good brush. If it helps justify it to yourself you get 2 additional brushes.
Personally the app thing is pointless. But I do check the performance figures eg does one day removes x7 plaque and the other x3
