im in the market for replacing my gas hob and have come across the gas hobs with a wok burner at the back? Are they any good? i don't really cook chinese but cook alot of indian food.

Im wondering aside from chinese wok cooking, is it okay for normal cooking? Does it burn food easily etc? or should i just stick to a normal hob?
TIA

I have one and just find it too powerful. I have to watch food like a hawk or it burns. I have old saucepans though so if yours are better than mine you might have more luck.

We have one and it is powerful flame but is probably our most used ring. We rarely use it for a wok but it is great for our cast iron griddle pan and for boiling big pans of liquid.

We have 1, use it for work regularly but also great for large cast iron pans.

I had a wok burner in the kitchen in my old house. I LOVED it, and I still miss it over 2 years later. When I re-do the kitchen in this house, I will have a proper hob with a wok burner.

I have one, it does burn things quickly so need to watch it. Rarely used, to be honest.

I have one and DH uses it for his wok at least 2 or 3 times a week.for stir fry. I use it with my pressure cooker to make a vat of stew in the winter every week. It has a high flame but it's great for cooking food quickly. Like lots of things in life, you just need to keep an eye on it. I don't think we'd want to be without one now.

TheProvincialLady · 11/06/2023 21:24

I love mine and don’t even own a wok, but it’s great for large pans of any kind and especially for boiling pasta etc. I wouldn’t be without mine.

Clymene · 11/06/2023 21:39

I have one and I burn things on it! It's great for stir fries but I've made the mistake of using it for other things in a big pan. Even on a low heat it's fierce.

WonkyPicture · 11/06/2023 21:42

Rarely use it as it's too hot.

Crucible · 11/06/2023 21:49

Mine is on the left of the 4 other rings. The ones with the wok ring in the middle make no sense - so difficult to cook anything else around a hot wok ring.

Mine has excellent flame control (it has two rings of flame and once it goes below a certain point on the dial, the hot outer ring goes out and you're left with a small ring of flame in the centre. Use it for very wide pans as well as my wok and on low I have cooked scrambled eggs. Made by Bosch.

I had one at our old house and loved it. Only really used it for wok cookery but sometimes put a large pan of water on it that I needed to boil quickly.

CatsOnTheChair · 11/06/2023 21:59

We have one.
I never use it - it's too strong even on its lowest power once you've got things going.
DH cooks with a wok as his first preference pan. It's his go to ring - although he did explode an egg on it this evening...

Thanks everyone I think I will take the plunge I get one. My current job is 25 years old! I think I'm definitely going to find any hob I buy a bit on the fierce side. The one I've seen is the Neff 4 burner hob.

I've got one on a range cooker. It is great for some things, like cooking pakora.

As one of six rings, I love it.
As one of four rings, I might not be so keen.

Yes and no....I have a wok burner and still it's not hot enough to get a proper wok hey. That's the char you get cooking fast on an extreme heat....real wok burners in a Chinese kitchen are like flame throwers. Super hot...I find I have to cook in smaller batches and pre heat my wok before I put anything in it just to replicate real Chinese cooking....it takes some skill..... but it will never be hot enough

We have one. It is actually two concentric burners one inside the other. Paradoxically it gets used most for keeping coffee hot or simmering as the inside burner can be turned down lower than any of the other burners.

Yes - mine is in the middle. It's a real pain as the iron grid that supports the pans is raised higher over the central wok burner, and it means you can't use larger pans on the other burners because they won't sit flat.

I do like it for using the wok though.
