Mirtazapine. Want to come off. Weight gain etc.

Hellooo

I've been on mirtazapine 30mg since Christmas. I have always been slim and a size 6-8. I have gained over a stone. I am strict with eating and I eat a deficit everyday but some now, I am gaining weight.

This is murky territory for me as I used to have quite a bad relationship with food. When I gain weight it goes straight to my stomach. Everywhere else is slim but my stomach literally looks like I'm 6 months pregnant.

It's getting me SO down. I want the weight to come off. I don't carry extra weight well due to my shape. My BMI is still healthy but I am considerably bigger than normal, than when I feel healthy. I feel heavier. I hate it.

What doesn't help is I'm also on steroids for low blood pressure.

Can I have any success stories please if you came off mirtazapine, did you lose the weight? I've started tapering and I'm now on 15mg and I'm nibbling a bit off every few days with my pill cutter as I desperately don't want insomnia or rebound anxiety. Did you lose the weight at a lower dose or only when you stopped the medication completely? At a total loss.. I don't overeat, I'm active. I don't drink.

Any advice or stories please!

I was on mirtazepine over 16 years ago . I came off them lost 1/2 stone in a month and then conceived Dc.

I have been on it again for a few months it is a really good antidepressant - I have gained about half a stone.. but whilst I am not pleased with the weight gain I feel much better and will hopefully get myself into a batter place before coming off them .

Thank you for replying. How did you find coming off them, did you taper?

I honestly don’t remember if I am honest . Do it with medical advice . I am on 15 mg so you could definitely reduce before coming off them.

I lost weight again quickly as soon as I came off it. It’s a brilliant AD for sedating, but the side effects of gaining weight made my depression worse. I hated myself more, felt weak as I couldn’t control my appetite, etc etc. Best wishes tapering.

I came off Mirt about 18 months ago for much the same reasons as you. I was unhappy about the weight gain although I had found it very useful in seeing me through a difficult time and would take it again if I needed it. I took it fairly slowly, cutting the pills down until I was taking just a crumb. I replaced it with magnesium glycinate which I still take. It doesn't make you sleep in the way that Mirt did but it does help. Took about three weeks to get a normal sleeping pattern. The weight came off fairly quickly at first but then I needed to diet to get rid of the final stone. I'm now slightly under the weight I was before I started, well within BMI, and happy with it.

As I've said I hope I don't need to take it again but if I needed to I would. Good luck.
