I want to be really good at something

I don't have any great skill in anything. I can cook a bit, speak a second language ok-ish, play the piano (but not that well).... but I can't do anything really, really well! I'm mediocre in a lot of things. What can I realistically (I'm 50) hone my skills at and become an expert? What are you really, really good at?

I'm really good at making dal and putting duvet covers on. Even king sized ones.

What's your favorite thing to do.

Sure. You "just" have to put the practice time in. Once you've got a thousand hours of watercolours/guitar/waterskiing/mountain climbing/public speaking under your belt, you'll be pretty damn good at it.

The difficulty is going through the first whon-knows-how-many hours where you're mostly disappointing yourself all the time at your lack of skills. Once you're through that, you're good. So pick something you want to do that you can bear to be crap at for weeks or months. For example, I would not recommend the trumpet.

Best thing is to find things you enjoy rather than finding something to be really good at. I started skateboarding in my forties and I’m never going to be Tony Hawk, but it is so fun and I’ve met some great people, some of whom are in the same position as me, taking up the sport later on in life!
