Vinted. Am I missing something?

Got loads of old clothes I'd like to get rid of for some extra cash.

However the suggested price for most of my items is around £2 (as expected) and postage 85p. But surely once you've included the packaging, you've lost money? Am I missing something?

What are people packaging these things in?

Buy a big roll of brown paper. Buyer pays postage.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 11/06/2023 13:30

Buyer pays postage so you don't pay for that, just packaging and as pp said just buy a big roll of brown paper or bulk buy bags

Old carrier bags etc but yes I think overall you’re probably not making much on the very cheap items. I have managed to get about £400 from it though just with loads of cheap things combined and a lot of things have sold in big bulk loads so that’s saved on bags

Alwayswonderedwhy · 11/06/2023 13:30

Ignore the suggested price if your item is worth more. Search ebay's sold items for prices and start there.
Buyer pays postage on Vinted so you only need to factor in packaging costs.

I bought 60 plastic postal bags for £5 on Amazon.

Fiadht · 11/06/2023 13:31

Also put your settings so that you only allow one or two delivery companies so you’re dropping things off in one place or you’ll be round every corner shop within 10 miles dropping a parcel off at each 🙈

Fiadht · 11/06/2023 13:32

Suggested prices start with the lowest also so scroll down to the bottom first, you can always reduce it if it doesn’t sell. I find listing at the weekend or near payday makes a huge difference as to what sells

Brilliant - thank you everyone!

I agree buy a bulk of postage bags on Amazon.

if you’d like £5 for an item, stick it on at £7. Folk will always haggle down.

I have toggled off all postage options bar Evri. No time to be driving around finding alternative parcel shops.

AliasGrape · 11/06/2023 14:07

I’ve never paid as little as 85p for postage on Vinted - it’s always a couple of quid.

Also, an awful lot of people seem to either reuse packaging by turning it inside out/ taping new address over the old one; or they use carrier bags/ bags for life. We have a ridiculous number of carrier bags here as we’re clearly terrible at remembering bags when we go shopping so I’ve started doing this when I need to post items too.

I reuse packaging from the online orders I received - works well and saves space in the paper/cardboard bin!

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 11/06/2023 14:14

Ignore the suggested prices - list your items at whatever price you think is reasonable. People can offer you less and you can choose to accept or not. I generally put my items up for slightly more than I'm willing to accept, and then will accept a lower offer. I signed up to Vinted about a month ago and I've sold a lot of things so far.

Regarding packaging; I keep all the packaging that comes with the things I order (I buy quite a lot online), so all the Amazon and Ebay packaging. Plus, as people have suggested, turn supermarket bags inside out, bin liners, just about anything so long as the item is securely packaged and safe. Ask other people to save their old packaging too instead of throwing it away.

BeBraveProfessor · 11/06/2023 14:15

Buyer pays packaging (and a protection fee) on top of price. So you get £2 but they have paid £4 (or whatever).

I reuse previous internet purchase packages.

LakeTiticaca · 11/06/2023 14:16

Buyer pays postage and I recycle bags that I have received stuff in . Pound shop/B&M do heavy duty blue rubble bags a roll of 20 for about £1/£1.50 ish , I use those as well and recycled shoebox.
If its just small items I usually price them a pound or 2 higher at first, you often get people asking if you would sell it for less. You can accept or decline.

I honestly CBA with these twice, twice I’ve had trousers that were period stained. Bobbly tops described as” only worn a few times”.

it’s too much effort going back and forward to a post office for £2 a pop.
