Avocado roulette anyone?! šŸ„‘

What are your top tips for consistently picking edible avocados at the supermarket? I’m sick of opening them to either find they are rock solid or brown sludge. My success rate is about one in four which makes it very expensive and creates lots of waste ā˜¹ļø. Every time I actually open one that is edible I feel like I’ve won the lottery!

Anyone willing to share their secret to avocado success?!

Choose one that’s a bit hard, handle it gently as they bruise easily. Ripen beside a banana (greenish one’s going yellow work best). Once just soft keep in fridge till you want it, they’ll last a couple of weeks like that. If you are only using half leave the stone in the bit you are saving to prevent browning then just cut off the open edge and discard when you use the rest.

Good banana tip. I usually want to eat them straight away but may have to curb my impatience

Yields to gentle touch

That's basically it.

I've been buying them for three decades so I feel them and can tell when they're going to last 2 days, that's how long I keep them for. Grab it, feel about, not enough to bruise it should you not want it.

You should be able to press down into it and it be soft but not mushy.

You might have to do trial and error but just feel.

If they feel rock solid then they are rock solid. I only buy ripe ones ready to eat that day or the next because otherwise you're back to roulette as you don't know when a rock solid one will ripen, and you don't know how long a mushy one has left.

rightioly · 11/06/2023 11:27

If you want to eat it right away give it a squidge

hedgehoglurker · 11/06/2023 11:51

Buy the Ripe & Ready ones. They feel hard, but are ripe and can be kept in the fridge. Don't try to ripen them as they will likely be rotten by the time they start to soften - I made this mistake often before I trusted that they were truly ripe.

Alternatively, unripe ones ripen faster in a paper bag with a banana.

BodegaSushi · 11/06/2023 11:53

Don't know the answer, my success rate is higher than yours but let me tell you it is orgasmic when I slice open the PERFECT avocado

I find the ripe and ready ones aren't ready at all 🄲

Once had one so hard and green even though it had felt soft. But I put it back together, wrapped it in foil, forgot it in the fridge for a week and it was šŸ‘ŒšŸ½

I shop online, so don't choose my own. However, my success rate with Ocado/ M&S R&R being ripe is probably around 95%. I buy a twin pack most weeks, so maybe I should get to a casino!

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 11/06/2023 12:13

I buy the cheapest packs of four that are solid, then leave them out of the fridge (no bananas involved) until they give slightly when cupped in my hand and gently squeezed. They will keep a couple of weeks at least at that stage. I buy another pack when I am down to two avocados so always have a ripe one on stock.

Luckynumbereight · 11/06/2023 12:16

The secret is to gently press the bit at the top which surrounds the ā€˜navel’ and if that is soft the avo is ripe. Also look for Hass avo’s as they are generally better.

liveforsummer · 11/06/2023 12:17

I go by gives when you squeeze but not too soft or feeling like the flesh inside has come away from the skin. According to dd 9 though if the little stalk at the top comes away easily and it's green under then it's good, if it's brown under then it's bad, if it's hard to remove then it's not ripe. Apparently saw it on tik tok 🫣

DuesToTheDirt · 11/06/2023 12:24

I bought some ripe & ready ones last week - they obviously weren't ripe, but fine. Took a week before any were ready to eat. The first was great, the second was ripe in most places but had a section that was inedibly solid. Another variation is to be just ripe on the outside but black round the stone. Arrgh!

jaffacakesareevil · 11/06/2023 12:51

I haven't had a bad avocado for a few months now. Think I've sussed it- this is what I do.

-Buy them when they are green
-Put them in a separate bowl to ripen on the worktop (keeping them close to other fruits forces the ripening to happen too quickly I think)
-Put them in the fridge once they have black skin and are almost perfectly ripe.

TonTonMacoute · 11/06/2023 13:08

Top tip is don’t ever buy avocados from Peru. I’ve never, ever had one that I haven’t had to throw away.

Apparently it is to do with storage/shipping conditions (I can’t track down the very clear explanation I read about it).

The European season is over now, but I have always found avocados from Israel and South Africa to be a far better buy, but they are more difficult to find as the crappy Peruvian ones are everywhere.

clary · 11/06/2023 13:10

Yes DS1 has told me the tip about the stalk bit coming out (or not).

I buy them in packs of cheap ones from the supermarket and then when they yield to gentle squeeze they are ready.

Trouble is they are all ready at once and I am the only person who eats avos here so I have to gorge on them šŸ˜

They are often not ripe. Despite saying so.

Agree about the Hass avs.

DelilahBucket · 11/06/2023 19:50

Ocado ripe and ready are the best ones. They are perfect for about three days after purchase.

Okay I have 2 packs of ready to eat avocados from M&S in the fridge. That’s 4 avocados…to be opened Monday to Thursday this week. Only had Peruvian so not able to compare and contrast. I will report back on progress and see if I beat my 25% strike rate.

Peach roulette should be the name of a lovely summery pudding. I quite fancy one now. Someone invent it, please.
