How much does your cleaner charge?

My DH and I have been thinking about hiring a cleaner for a couple of hours a week. How much do your cleaners charge?

We're in Scotland if that makes any difference.

Also always offer or leave out stuff for a coffee or tea or fresh water/squash.
Mine always refuse, but I sometimes get a red bull when I remember as that’s their refreshment of choice.

Yeah I’m so mean for not expecting anyone to work for less than the living wage just because they live round the corner!

Also I hope you never fall out with your cleaner or someone points out to her that she is underpaid and is being taken advantage of. Especially if she doesn’t have multiple clients (given her low earnings) and uses your equipment. HMRC could easily define her as an employee and you’d be-liable for back pay, holiday pay and a monthly fine from her start date.

Using professional cleaners protects you from these issues.

I'd expect to pay £15 ph for regular bookings and £18 or thereabouts for one-off cleans.

You are, of course right. Next time I see her I will tell her she can’t clean for me any more because she would be better off getting a customer where she has to walk for 20-30 mins each way (doesn’t drive) and charge NMW. She’ll no doubt be relived my superior knowledge has come up with this solution.

Out of curiosity - when I ask some how much they charge and they say £10 per hour- what should I have done?

I mean, I was under the mistaken understanding that £10 per hour without tax etc was actually slightly more than NMW and taking out commuting time and transport, actually better off. Adding in choosing her own customer who doesn’t follow her round with a white glove and can choose her own hours. I even foolishly thought that she understood that, since it was what she quoted.

Phew. Thank goodness for the wisdom of mumsnet.

Don’t worry Rishi, she’ll be working for an agency being treated like dirt before you know it!

Or you could pay her more. Minimum wage plus holiday pay in lieu works out at £11.68ph if that helps. Minimum wage went up in April as you’re so nice to work for you could suggest a rate increase to show that you value her and her hard work.

WhatHaveIFound · 11/06/2023 10:47

Yorkshire - £17 per hour.

My mum (also Yorkshire) is getting ripped off at £25/hr but refuses to believe that she's being overcharged.

BHRK · 11/06/2023 10:57

£15ph

This. Pay her NMW for goodness sake

Massively undervaluing herself if she’s wonderful AND working for less than National minimum wage

Lilly0909 · 16/06/2023 19:42

I’m £20ph near Stansted. Provide all supplies/products and do a top job

SomeonTookMyAnonymousUserName · 16/06/2023 19:49

I'm in the west of Scotland and pay £15 per hour. She supplies her own products although she uses our vacuum, mop, etc.

theDudesmummy · 16/06/2023 19:51

€15 an hour in rural Ireland
