Have you stuck at it? What benefits do you notice?

I don’t have a standing desk. I do have an elliptical bike under my sitting desk. When I use it, I find that I am much less stiff. The catch is that if I am having a really thought intensive stressful day, I find myself stopping peddling.

I bodged together a standing desk using an ikea hack - clamped a table top to a book case and attached 2 extandable table legs to the end. It works great. Because it doesn't move up/down, I got a bar stool to use when I feel the need.

I've WFH/hybrid for years, and have been using this setup at home for about 4 years now. It's tiring at first, and it's probably a good idea to stand on a yoga mat or something to relieve any strain, as well as shoeless. But I vastly prefer standing to sitting all day. It helps me mentally, mostly. I feel very slow witted after a day of sitting at the office.

I've got an up/down desk. I tend to stand (on a wobble board otherwise I lock my knees) during meetings, and sit on my rocking kneeling chair to work but do mix it up. My core is much stronger for standing more

Oh, I have a wobble board too. And sometimes I do stretches or yoga moves during meetings (not on camera!).

I used to have one at my old work, it was fantastic. I used it whilst I was pregnant and barely sat down.

I felt much more energised and didn't seem to get that three o'clock slump. I did have to be a bit aware of my position though and made sure I didn't slump and tried to stand straight. I also wore flat shoes.

I have a sit/stand desk and also a rocking stool instead of a chair. My back and hips thank me for it.

I probably stand between half and two-thirds of the day.

I have a desk converter. I stand quite a lot - I have painful joints if I sit for too long so definitely better!

Datafan55 · 10/06/2023 19:42

My psoas (hip) muscle has been clamped in spasm for the last few weeks ... Very painful. Probably shortening for years. Sitting all day is a major cause of this!

Pandonut · 10/06/2023 19:44

We have them at work, I really like them. I noticed a difference when working from home during covid and having to be seated all day to work- I found I had to take more breaks just to stretch!

HowardKirksConscience · 10/06/2023 19:47

another view - I bought a desk converter in lockdown and hated every minute of it, and I am in no way a person who enjoys being sedentary. I found it incredibly difficult to concentrate on the screen.

I use one at home and in the office, generally stand for most meetings I have and find I’m more focused and less distracted, especially if I am presenting on the call.
It did take some practice and needed to build up the standing periods from 10 minutes at a time, can now comfortably do an hour. Also wearing trainers is better than shoes/bare feet.

Would you be able to share the model you have?

I have a standing desk and I love it. I find it really helps my productivity as it’s much harder to procrastinate while standing up (for me it is anyway) and I swap between sitting and standing all day.

I have an exercise mat I stand on in bare feet, or I use some comfy flat sandals and just stand on the carpet.

I have psoas issues too which is why I’m looking into it. Mine isn’t as bad as yours though so you have my sympathies!

I have just tried the kneeling lunge exercise for the first time. Yikes. Couldn't get much of a stretch because I was wobbling (even next to the wall), and ow my back! Hmmm....

I did spend years lying down/standing for most of the day, but in the last few years I have been sitting much more. Thus following your thread :-)

Ilikewinter · 11/06/2023 18:02

I also stand. I worked in retail for 20 years so when I switched to a desk job I just couldnt sit still, felt like a slob!. Im hybrid so stand at home and sit at work...my work days are a struggle, im constantly shifting around and have to go for a walk.
