Confused about child passport application

EatingWormsMichael · 10/06/2023 17:48

Hello, I've done the online application and paid. It says once someone has verified the child identity I'll need to send docs from this list:

Applicant’s documentsSend the following:

  • full birth or adoption certificate (showing both the child’s and parents’ details)
  • if this applies, any court orders relating to the child (for example that describe parental responsibility or residency arrangements)

Parents’ documentsFor 1 of your parents, send 1 of the following:

  • full birth or adoption certificate (showing both the child’s and parents’ details)
  • naturalisation or registration certificate
  • the non-British passport they had when you were born showing indefinite leave to remain

It's the parents docs that I'm confused about. I already entered my passport info. My birth certificate doesn't list my parents so that doesn't seem to fit what they want. I'm listed on my child's birth certificate so do they mean they just want that??

Anyone know what I need??

I think you need to get your full birth certificate that will have your parents details on

EatingWormsMichael · 10/06/2023 18:11

Thanks @GayPareeee looks like it doesn't it? Despite not having needed it for over 40 years and having a uk passport! Sigh. Have just applied for a full birth cert via a very dodgy looking website that claims to be the passport office.

If you're a British National and you're applying for a UK passport within the UK you only need your passport I'm sure as your supporting documents. At least that's my take on doing the paper application. Can't see why your UK passport wouldn't be sufficient. Seems to be an either or thing.

Also the person is verifying the parents identity not the child's.

dementedpixie · 10/06/2023 18:42

They don't need your birth certificate
They need the child's birth certificate and your passport number (I'm assuming it's a British passport)

EatingWormsMichael · 10/06/2023 18:43

That would be my assumption @Pashazade but the wording in my first post is cut and paste from the application page. I'm going to send mine and dc birth cert once I get my "full" birth cert ordered. What a faff.

You're born in Britain with a valid British passport?
If so I think you only need the child's birth certificate. Those are the docs you can send to proove passport eligibility, but you don't need to proove that so you don't need to send any of them.

EatingWormsMichael · 10/06/2023 18:52

Yep I'm British with British passport. Maybe the above text is generic and once the identity confirmation bit is done they'll send a clearer email. But I wanted to be ready and panicked when I saw that my birth certificate doesn't list all that. Hope I haven't wasted 38 quid getting a full birth cert! Oh well.

Dc dad is German and we aren't married so maybe they wanted more id than usual?? I can't get his documents, not seen him for 5 years!

dementedpixie · 10/06/2023 18:56

You pass on your British citizenship to her. They don't need any more of her dad's details

EatingWormsMichael · 10/06/2023 19:08

Yes @dementedpixie I wanted it ASAP so it doesn't hold up the passport. If you click on the start now button it takes you to some mad desktop view on mobile, then the payment bit is a rubbish worldpay thing. Just felt so unofficial!!

Assuming you were born after 1981 they need to know how you acquired your British nationality. That's why they need your full birth certificate too.

Stressfordays · 10/06/2023 19:31

I just did my kids first passports and they needed my birth certificate despite having my passport number. Luckily they didn't request grandparents info like they did for my friend!

dementedpixie · 10/06/2023 20:42

According to this if the passport number is provided they don't need grandparent's details

Confused about child passport application
dementedpixie · 10/06/2023 20:44

There's been a few cases of people being asked for more info than is required when applying online. When they have phoned the advice line they have been told they only need passport details and the child's birth certificate.

Could you ring and ask them?

EatingWormsMichael · 10/06/2023 21:09

Thanks @dementedpixie I'll see what message I get when the identity verification bit is done and take it from there. Wish I'd waited before buying a full birth certificate, but you live and learn. I'll ring someone if its not clear at the next bit.

Pleased I avoided the grandparent bit, how crazy.

Hi, has anyone had to apply for a child's passport with one parent deceased & how would you apply? My child already had a previous passport but it's expired it needs a renewal.

Austinriviera · 16/03/2025 11:13

Hi, did you get to the bottom of this? I’ve had the same request for my online application for my son‘s passport. I’m a British citizen and didn’t use the fast track option.
