Tradesman bitten by dog

It's my friend's son. He was doing some plumbing work in their house and the dog has sunk his teeth into plumber's leg. There is a clear bite mark with broken skin.

It's been cleaned up and his tetanus is up to date. Does he need to "do" anything about the dog?

OP posts:

Surely the law is if it bites anyone ever it gets pts? No matter what the circumstances or if it is your own pet in your house. If not it needs to be changed so it is.

Wow the dog loving crazies out again. What if it was a toddlers head it ripped off instead of a grown man's thigh?

Boomboom22 · 10/06/2023 22:31

As has happened twice in the last 30 days in the UK according to the news. Not counting all the other killings.
I do assume all the owners are being done for manslaughter.

Boomboom22 · 10/06/2023 22:32

It's murder really when an owners dog kills but guess manslaughter will have to do. I think of dog owners of bullies and gsd like antisocial, same as carrying a knife machete or gun. Basically killers.

No, the law is not that if a dog bites it automatically has to be put down. There are lots of situations where a dog might feel the need to bite. Like if it is being physically hurt by someone, feels threatened, being teased, spooked, trying to defend someone. In these cases, the bites are not unprovoked and are not happening because the dog is dangerous.

We don't know what the circumstances surrounding this particular bite was. The OP has not come back to elaborate. Maybe the dog was scared and saw the tradesman as a threat and was trying to protect his owner and his territory. That does not warrant being euthanized. The owners should now put measures in place to be on the safe side.

And no, I don't seem all dogs are harmless little teddy bears, I just don't hysterically view them all as murderous, blood thirsty monsters. But then articles on dog attacks aren't my only source of information on dogs.

Not sure about E&W but in Scotland it's not automatic. The procurator fiscal (prosecutor) must make an application to the sheriff (judge) to PTS but the Sheriff doesn't have to grant it.

Usually they'll ask for the dog to be assessed by a professional. They may order destruction but they might order removal to a "suitable person" or charity or decide that circumstances mean dog can stay with the owner, with or without conditions.

Police.

Sheselectric77 · 10/06/2023 23:41

I work in peoples home. It’s an every week occurrence to come across aggressive dogs. Most times owners are sensible but not always. Nothing can or will be done unfortunately.
Neighbours large dog has bitten people twice after escaping and running up to passer by. Police have clearly said they have no powers to do anything about it because it’s been to court and was not ordered to be pts. They can’t even enforce any restrictions.

Redhairblackheart · 11/06/2023 00:00

For those saying that theres no offence because the dog was in its own home are very wrong. 'dangerously out of control' includes public AND private places inc their home and it doesnt even have to bite, just make someone fear it will.

Its an offence, plumber can report it or your son can.

I know some kids like to do some little jobs to earn a bit of money, but I am not aware of any toddlers employed as tradespeople and regularly entering other people's homes.

Oh, are dogs not allowed to leave their homes now? I'd missed that legislation but that's fantastic news. If I never saw one again I'd be very happy!

Of course not. If a dog is being tortured and it bites it won't be PTS. If a police dog bites. It won't be PTS.

Stop giving legal advice if you are so clueless.

As others have explained, that is not the law.

So the crazy dog lovers reported my post and it was deleted? wtf is going on here? Yes my partner was bitten as he was laid down on the ground doing work for a customer, he was bitten on the shoulder from behind after asking the woman numerous times to lock the dog away, Of course he hit it ffs. It wasn't a 'puppy' as in 6 weeks or 6 months old it was a DOG!

Boomboom22 · 11/06/2023 21:45

Yep mine too. Because I said having dogs like these is akin to carrying a knife. Facts apparently are delete worthy now.
