Daughter’s first period

Sorry if this is a bit personal but DD11 started menstruating for first time yesterday and has been invited to a garden party with a pool today. I am going to go and try and find period swimming costume this morning but any ideas on reason she can give her friends for not going swimming if I can’t find any? She’s worried and I feel sorry for her. I bought some period underwear already but don’t think that works in water?

Can she not just tell her friends she can't swim because she has her period? It's not unusual at age 11.
Otherwise, can she "forget" her swim stuff, or just say say she doesn't feel like swimming?

Yes, she should be able to say she she has her period but most of the class are there and she really doesn’t want to say as she thinks everyone will then know. If she says she has forgotten swimwear, I think the birthday girl will offer to lend her some as it’s at her house. Maybe I will just subtly say to the mum. Or that she has a verruca or something…

She can just say she doesn't want to, there doesn't have to be an explanation.

May you could have quiet word with the girls mum who can then let the birthday girl know ??

Or wrap a bandage, or stick a large plaster on or around your DD leg / arm and say she can't go in the water doctors orders.

Thank you for your suggestions. Am overthinking, sure it will be fine. 🤞

Don't say she has a verruca.

I'd go for saying she is getting over an ear infection. And then she can sit on the side and put her legs in. It also gives a good reason for her to come home early if she doesn't feel in the mood.

If she doesn't want anybody knowing, I'd not tell the mum unless you know for sure that she won't tell her daughter.

Do you think she would be capable of using a tampon?

My mum wasn't ready for my period, so I started out with tampons from the start age 11. I was in a swimming squad and tampons were what most of us used as we didn't miss swim training.

I'm sure this question has been posted about 3 times in the last week..

Amore2023 · 10/06/2023 10:41

@Bexx87 oh, sorry if it has but I haven’t read any and I am on here most days. But in any case, this is my post about our situation…

Anyway, thanks all and have a great day! ☀️👙
