Car insurance costs astronomical for new teen driver!

Does anyone have any idea how we can look to reduce cost? We haven’t bought a car yet but I’m looking at the cheapest options.

For context - the cheapest quote so far based on 5,000 miles a year, with black box, on a 12 year old fiat 500 with a 0.9l engine, the cost of insurance is £4,000 a year! That includes me as named driver with 15 years no claims…

Im not sure what else we can do to bring the cost down - is this just how expensive it is these days?

That's doesn't sound right to me. My 17y old passed last September and his insurance was £900 with black box, his premium, us both as named drivers. Most of his friends are paying £1200 or so.

We haventhad renewal costs yet. Surely it hasn't gone up that much in a year?

Clariana · 09/06/2023 18:40

Gosh, that is expensive! We have a 17 year old just passed his test insured on his Citroen C1 with Dad and I also on the policy, but he is the lead driver. He has a black box, but the insurance is c£750 / year, much cheaper so I would shop around different cars.

Gumbo · 09/06/2023 18:42

I've just insured my 17 year old teen... Same size engine, 2 years newer car - with black box and 4k miles it's costing £800. That's with RAC - shop around, you're being fleeced!

RoseDog · 09/06/2023 18:42

Ds is £1200 a year on 1l fiesta and he's the only driver with a black box, he was only 17 when he passed and started the policy, he's with ticker.

Minfilia · 09/06/2023 18:42

I thought something wasn’t right but I have no idea what 😩

DD is almost 18 and I’d expected insurance to be up to about £2k but this is horrifying!

Have you tried the moneysavingexpert guide? A few things helped me with my first insurances

ejbaxa · 09/06/2023 18:44

Is it your postcode? I have a learner insured (17) and it’s way less.

Ellemeg82 · 09/06/2023 18:44

Don't forget costs can vary depending on where you live, where the car is parked overnight, where it's parked during the day etc.

Money saving expert has some useful info about first time drivers and insurance.

£4000 seems very high. I would have expected it to be more like 2-2.5k.

Whenisitsummer · 09/06/2023 18:50

We paid £2800 without a black box, could it be your postcode? Have you used a comparison site ?

whirlyhead · 09/06/2023 18:53

A friend just bought their 17 year old daughter a £10k car and paid about £4k for the insurance so I’m not surprised.

Minfilia · 09/06/2023 18:55

It could be our postcode yes - it’s a “new” postcode with only 2 houses in it so I guess they don’t have the data.

if it’s that then we are pretty screwed!

I’ll check out MSE though thanks.

Car budget was 6-7k so we aren’t trying to get anything fancy!

Look at all kinds of companies including direct line that aren't on comparison sites. Dd paid £850 no black box her first year of driving, a little older

WateryDoom · 09/06/2023 19:06

It's utterly ridiculous. DS 18 bought a 15 yo Honda Jazz - a 1.2 litre and we assumed it would be cheap.

It cost him £2000 to insure, even with both parents as named drivers on it and a black box fitted.

Honestly at this point I’d happily take 2k! The insurance on a 1.2 Honda jazz that we looked at was 6k!! Have to laugh or I’d cry!

I’ll add DH to the policy too, maybe that’ll help… it was more expensive to add him to mine though as he had a (not his fault!) accident when an HGV hit him trying to overtake another HGV on the motorway….

We used Marmalade. It’s separate insurance for learner drivers. They also do young driver insurance.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 09/06/2023 19:13

To put 17yr old on my 1.6L mini insurance as a named driver would have been £1700.

Using Marmalade "bolt on" insurance was £1300. Policy in his name & he builds up his own NCD.

Black box simply sticks on windscreen, no messing about fitting it to the engine.

Only downside is he can only drive 50% or less of the total annual mileage.

So ideal if you want to put teen on your car.

EyelessArseFace · 09/06/2023 19:26

Who's your existing insurer for your own vehicle? Have you asked them?

WeAllHaveWings · 09/06/2023 19:43

Ds was "only" £1k on a 1.0L fiesta Ecoboost, with no black box, 18 months ago, found on go compare.

I just put in the same car into a go compare quote with same address and details he had 18 months ago and cheapest quote is over £2k now 😱

Admiral - they want £6,200 to add her as a named driver but the car is only 18 months old.

Marmalade have quoted £3,800 through confused.com and £7,600 on their website 😩

I give up. She can have either a pushbike or skateboard depending on preference 😂

OP posts:
cptartapp · 09/06/2023 20:07

That sounds mad.
It cost us £700 with black box for DS1 although he was 19. Then to add DS2 at 17 another £400.
Renewal quote just in £800 for both with one years no claims.

Effingmagicfairy · 09/06/2023 20:12

DS first year insurance with Admiral was £950, black box and us as named drivers, 2nd year after an at fault bump resulting in other car claiming £1150 which I didn’t think was too bad considering.

caringcarer · 09/06/2023 20:25

This has always been the case. Get them cars with very small engines. Uncool cars basically.

caringcarer · 09/06/2023 20:30

It's because your car is new. Buy them an older car and the insurance will be cheaper.

waterlego · 09/06/2023 20:31

We’ve just paid about £1800 for DD. She has only just passed her test a couple of weeks ago. The policy is in her name so she can (hopefully!) accumulate some NCB. Also has black box. I wouldn’t be surprised if our postcode has made it more expensive as we live in the South East and everything is expensive here. There is also lot of traffic in and around our town, not sure if that makes a difference to premiums but it would make sense.
