Non gendered relative words

You have grandchild, granddaughter, grandson

You have parent, mother, father

You have sibling, sister, brother

But only neice/ nephew, and aunt/uncle

Why don't we have a non gendered word for them?

(Unless there is and I have forgotten ot)

You searched my posting history? Bet that was enlightening.😂

Considering how invested you are in this potentially contentious gender-related topic, I'm surprised that the only comments you have made on the thread since your OP have been digs at me, rather than responding to any of the other posters who've commented and made interesting observations.
"Do you know how 'chat' works?" you asked. You haven't exactly engaged in the 'chat' either, to be fair.

I started a conversation.

You made a shitty comment

I searched your history, hoping for some wonderful insightful meaningful content, and yet you talked about beans.... which was in contrast to your comment about "what a non issue"

Maybe I would have replied with interest about the Korean or Swedish words used, but unfortunately there was an areshole trying to derail.

***

Is parsib parents sibling?

Is the woman married to my husbands brother my sister in law? Like said above, i guess there are 3 types of sister in law, my husbands sister, married to my brother, and married to my husbands brother.

So who is... the man married to my mums brothers wife's sister? Would he be my mums brother in law? Any relation at all

I’m French the same word is used for step-sister and sister in law - there isn’t a way to clarify the relationship without a family tree type explanation

I think definitions have changed in English (or used to be more flexible). Researching my family history, I've seen son/daughter-in-law used where we would now say step-son/daughter.

I thought that it was half-sister and step-sister that used the same word and that there was a different word for SIL.

You aren’t doing yourself any favours here OP.

It looks like you are trying to bully the other poster into submission and it’s that, rather than her comment, which is spoiling the thread.

Its just so draining for someone to come on a chat thread with crap like they have, its not AIBU, its an observation. Its traditional here to chat - I don't know why they decided to come on and complain.

I'm not bullying, I'm standing up for myself.

Hmm. Don’t particularly disagree about the original message but it was something and nothing and didn’t justify the advanced searching, hectoring etc. much better to leave alone.

That's because you've hardly engaged with the chat. Plenty of other posters have had interesting discussions on this thread.

I never thought about this, how true! I remember dd telling me they in the Korean language, there are two different words for your auntie.

My wife comes from Central Asia and they have names for every conceivable relative you can possibly imagine. First cousins translate as "second sister / second brother."

N0tANOoDl3He4D · 11/06/2023 14:51

It's nibling. It's just also really not used much at all, so people have stopped being aware the word exists.

Aww, that’s really cute. I like the idea of a cousin being a ‘second sister/brother.’ I definitely think my kids feel like that about their cousins. Are your second cousins ‘third sister/brother?’

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 11/06/2023 18:07

In my native language they're all gendered, because all nouns are gendered and very few are neutral. Adjectives and determiners change form too depending whether you talk about a male or a female. Fun stuff Grin
