DS just read Harry Potter but now I have the same question as you, OP.

Voiceofreason92 · 08/06/2023 21:14

My son reads the David Baddiel books, the Land of Roar trilogy were a massive hit and the Dead Good detectives by the same author kept us both hooked. He tried Percy Jackson but was a little too hard going for a bedtime read.
At the beginning of year 4, he demolished the Tom Gates books but they are a little easy now

I can highly recommend a book called The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tullane- such a stunning book. Warning- you'll cry. I read it to my year 4 class last year and they adored it. (One maybe more to read together)
Also, Podkin one ear worth read- read that to Year 4 too.

My DD(8) is a massive bookworm and likes Harry Potter, David Walliams, lots of random fairy/unicorn books, worst witch, isadora moon, land of roar, the boy who grew dragons, how to train a dragon and similar. She's just started who let the gods out and seems to be enjoying that so far. Anything to do with magic seems to be a hit!

Just to clarify The Land of Roar books are by Jenny Maclachlan, not David Baddiel! (Just read my message back and it wasnt clear

My DS is year 3 but reading above his age, I think. Books he has read himself: all the DogMan books, all the Bunny vs Monkey books, Tom Gates, Jeremy Strong books. We have read Harry Potter 1-4 to him and all the Roald Dahls which he has re-read by himself. He has also loved the Atticus Claw and Mr Gum series. He's not so keen on David Walliams. We're slowly going through Percy Jackson (reading to him).

Books we have lined up to start: How to Train your Dragon series, Wizards of Once series, Narnia series, also hoping to try some of my childhood favourites like Judy Blume and Betsy Byars!

The adventurers series by Jemma Hatt and the ‘Treehouse’ series by Andy Griffith and Terry Denton are both big hits for my yr4 class.

DS2 is just finishing Y4 and has enjoyed Holes, the Artemis Fowl books, the Percy Jackson books and the Magnus wotsit books by the same author. At school he has read kensuke's kingdom and true tales of WWII which he liked as well. He still loves a wimpy kid book and a 15748 story treehouse when he finds them. Also can read Tintin till the cows come home.

Reading aloud, he has enjoyed the never ending story, the wolves of willoughby chase, and currently reading wee free men by Terry pratchett.

Magazines, he likes Aquila and the Week Junior.

Helen Moss' Adventure Island books were a huge hit at that stage - a bit Enid Blyton adventures in a lovely coastal spot type of thing, but up to date ethos if you know what I mean! 2 brothers, their female friend and her dog are the main characters and they're an easy read, not too long. There's 14 in the series and they were read over and over again. I knew they were a huge hit when DS1 called me into his room so he could read bits out to me when he thought they were funny - never happened before or since.

The Chronicles of Prydain are fantastic - a fantasy series based on Welsh mythology.

bluechameleon · 09/06/2023 19:37

In my Year 4 class the Flat Stanley books are popular.
