What would you buy? Used SUV under £25k for towing horsebox

Hi all,

Sorry if this is the wrong place but I need to chat this through! I am needing to swap my current ford focus for something that will tow a minimum of 2 ton (horsebox). I am looking for some advice on what you would do in my situation.
My current car has no outstanding finance and is worth £10,600 part exchange. I know I could maybe get a bit more on the private market but am looking at part exchanging as we are a one car family so can’t really be without a car whilst selling privately then arranging a purchase. I plan on taking out a personal loan and dipping into some savings to come up with a total budget of £25,000. The loan repayments will be £190 a month over 5 years so I will ideally need a car that will last me at least 5 years doing approx 13,000 miles a year. The car needs to deal with regular 30 min commutes through the countryside and bypass roads. Very occasional city driving, weekends away in the U.K. and also towing a 17hh horse and horsebox a few times a month (combined weight of 1680kg. All tack/water etc will be in the car).

As this is quite a lot of money to spend (for me it is anyway!!) I do want to have a car that I feel looks nice and I enjoy to drive. Looks aren’t everything but I do really like the look of SUVs that can tow- a discovery sport/ Jaguar f-pace would be an absolute dream. For £25000 I can get a 2018 model with less than 40,000 miles on the clock and a 12 month warranty.

However my FIL (who is very against Jaguar landrover due to the common knowledge that they can be unreliable) is convinced we should be going for something more like a VW Tiguan, which for £25k we could get something similar age/mileage but with a 2 year warranty from a main dealer, and in his mind would be a much more reliable purchase. Could possibly find one a year or two newer but still would be similar mileage. He thinks it is worth spending more on what is essentially a cheaper car (on the local dealership market) as the warranty is worth having for 2 years- but I am arguing that we would be overpaying for the extra year and would also not have a car I am particularly fussed about.

I guess my question is what would you do if you were me? Dream car with 12 months warranty and (possible) reliability issues, or VW Tiguan with 24 months warranty. Both same price/age/mileage.

Thoughts on the cars I have mentioned? Or, would you be considering something else entirely?

I appreciate we are all quite hard up at the moment so apologies if this comes across as insensitive. We are a dual income household with 1 car and purchased our first house last January (with a mortgage), so can now afford to spend on a car we like, but can’t stretch to buying new. No children currently which also helps!

I'd go Japanese 4x4. Mitsubishi or Toyota.

RipWheelersHat · 08/06/2023 13:52

PIL's have a Tiguan which we recently borrowed from them, and I was actually quite surprised by how small it felt inside, considering they look like quite big cars. So if you do have a lot of big horse related stuff to put in there I don't know how much room you would have

twistyizzy · 08/06/2023 13:52

Really do your homework on the towing capacity and remember to include weight of horses + equipment eg water. Go for one which can tow well above what you need, rather than one which is borderline as noone wants to be halfway up a hill with no power to get out of difficulty.
You will definitely need an automatic too, one of our liveries burned out the clutch on her manual the first time she took her new trailer out.
Friends have got: Nissan Navara's (excellent for towing and a smooth ride for horses), Mercedes and the obligatory Toyotas.

I have a LR Discovery Sport and it’s awful. It’s been recalled, only a slight risk of fire apparently, and in fixing that they fucked up the gearbox software which lead to it getting stuck in neutral whilst driving, thankfully not on a hill or motorway. It’s been stolen like 1 in 100 LR/RRs are because it’s the most popular car to steal by a country mile, and we only got it back because it has a tracker and the subscription was included with the purchase. Before that I had a Tiguan and it was a dream. I really wish I’d stuck with VW!

FlounderingFruitcake · 08/06/2023 13:54

I know nothing about towing though! That might change things

KidneyWarrior · 08/06/2023 13:55

I've got an f-pace and while I love the car, I'm not sure about towing a horse box with it. The back window is teeny tiny and can be a bit tricky to reverse. Still love the car though, and it's definitely reliable. It also has lovely extras like heated steering wheel which I love.

LittleFreakJezebel · 08/06/2023 14:02

I know two people who work at JLR (one a designer/engineer) and neither will touch them with a barge pole!

I would look at Japanese makes either Toyota or Mitsubishi, or Hyundai (Korean) I do really like the Tucson's.

Weeviking · 08/06/2023 14:14

Discovery is a comfy drive and absolute workhorse for the towing, I know someone who tows about 10k a year with one. Possibly more. It's 7 years old with 140k miles on the clock and still going quite good (there have been issues).

Ssang Yong is the current favourite with the largest towing capacity among farmers I know, however the 2.5l turbo has no power when you compare it to the discovery.

Hyundai engines are too small for towing.

Mitsi pulling out of U.K. market. (I have 2 and love them but won’t be buying another.)

Not sure a big standard Tiguan will have the towing capacity either. The Touareg would but would be pushing your budget.

dreamonlucid · 08/06/2023 14:26

Not jag, not landie they are bloody awful I've owned 5 and never would again.

The best brand for reliability we have found is Porsche, bear with me! The cayenne is huge, beautiful to drive, has the capacity to tow reliable and you can get them for £25k the depreciation is way slower so in 5 years you'll still have value.

Or the same car but cheaper is the Audi Q7

I don't know my vw or Japanese brands, so maybe explore those as well.

But the jag would be awful towing the rear screen is very small.

Hihihihihihihihihi · 08/06/2023 14:29

Love my mitsubishi for towing. I wouldn't go for a land rover (with potential never ending issues) but I also wouldn't go for a Tiguan. We used to have one as the 2nd car and wouldn't tow with it (we tried once and never again)

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 08/06/2023 14:31

Subaru outback 4x4 estate - proper workhorse and like a tardis inside.

Firkinhavinalaugh · 08/06/2023 14:32

Run as far as possible from a discovery. Ours has cost a fortune in parts and hours possibly days of my life arguing with LR and their awful service Dept’s. (£3k+ 🤬🤬🤬)
there is a reason you can get one with such low mileage - it’s probably never been able to do any more than that!
don’t go for style over substance!!!

Firkinhavinalaugh · 08/06/2023 14:34

Don’t discount a Kia either

Shade17 · 08/06/2023 14:38

A Toyota Landcruiser is probably the ultimate but may be too big for you and your budget will only stretch to a 2016 model.

xogossipgirlxo · 08/06/2023 14:54

My view is probably skewed, but I own Tiguan and love it. If we ever have to get rid of it, I will be crying my eyes out.

newtb · 08/06/2023 15:09

Would something like a berlingo or one of the Dacias bé up to the towing capacity. You could always ask Honest John who has a Telegraph column.

twistyizzy · 08/06/2023 15:11

Tiguan won't pull over 2T though surely?

Get a Toyota Hilux pickup - they are great for towing

Coppicekipper · 08/06/2023 15:17

I agree with this. You don't see ANY farmers towing livestock trailers with Jaguar Land Rover it's most usually a Toyota or a Ford Ranger. I have an old Ford Ranger. Mechanics HATE working on anything Land Rover Jaguar and will often just refuse to take them in for repairs. Toyotas and Fords they will have sorted in a day or two.

I hadn't thought of Ford, I'd LOVE a ranger one day.

Coupleofhorseypeople · 08/06/2023 15:42

Tiguan will pull 2.2ton max and I’ll be comfortably within the limits at 1.7 ton.
These posts are definitely putting me off the land rover but lots of the other cars mentioned are well out of budget unfortunately… boot space is needed so good point about the Tiguan space. Owners do seem to love them though!

Still love the look of the f-page Jaguar which will tow 2.4 tons and seems to have fantastic reviews but worried maintenance will be expensive with it being Jag. Small window isn’t something I’ve thought about but the tow assist is something that might make up for it??

I work for JLR and would go Jaguar over LR. You can also take extended warranty

KidneyWarrior · 08/06/2023 19:38

The f-pace is AWD, would you prefer a 4WD?

June2008 · 08/06/2023 19:42

Have a look at the Kia Sorrento or the Hyundai Santa Fe. Kias have a 7 Yr warranty so you could get something within you budget maybe with a few years on it? Hyundai has 5 yrs.

You can get all the bells and whistles on both if you find the right car. We've towed for years and they've been super reliable.
