Giving things human emotions

Firstly I'm aware I'm completely crazy. Ive always had anxiety, I'm also being referred for adhd.
BUT
Does anyone else gove things hunan emotions?
Like I used a shower gel I'm not keen in because it hadn't been used much so would feel unliked.
I eat the sweet I don't like as much because it would feel jealous.
Does anyone else do this?!

I say please and thank you to Alexa.
However the Sat Nav is an annoying twit so deserves every argument and curse word I throw at it.

It’s not an object, but I do it to spiders. I used to have a fear of them that was basically debilitating and totally ridiculous, and I really didn’t want to pass it to my kids. I started talking to them about the spiders, and once we were looking at a striped jumping spider and I was saying ‘look it is jumping to show off to you’ and I realised I wasn’t scared of them. Maybe just because I’d looked at them so much with my kids!

I have some hoarding tendencies too, I think inherited from my parents, so I have to be quite strict about decluttering. I wonder if people who are bad hoarders maybe give objects feelings and that’s why it’s so hard to just throw them away.

Yes, I have an old chest of drawers that is very much sentient. With my husband it is placid and helpful, but with me it is entirely malevolent and hateful. I live knowing my nemesis lurks in the dining room.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/06/2023 10:27

Yes. I do this all the time!

Toddlerteaplease · 08/06/2023 10:28

I have got loads of teddies that I just can't get rid of. I also bought an extra pot of hummus as it was the last one and it might be lonely.

xogossipgirlxo · 08/06/2023 12:01

Of course. I never talk bad about my car, because "he can hear it". Also, I could never hurt any of those stuffed animal toys, because you know, they will be upset.

chineapplepunks · 08/06/2023 12:21

I remember when I was in primary school I could never finish a written sentence if there was only one word left on a line because that word would be lonely!

Ut has a fam all crazy too!! 🤣
I did wonder if it was linked to adhd or not.
I frustrate myself with it! I can't even kill an ant or something because it has a family. (Flies not included)
I never choose the best biscuit because the others will feel neglected so I have one that not many people will like. If I have a box of chocolates I couldn't for instance eat all the toffees in one go because it wouldn't be fair on the others
Also realising that a lot of thus is food related! 😳

Oh wow haven't read all replies but I've been doing this my whole life! Off to Google the name!

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 09/06/2023 08:56

I love that Michael Macintyre sketch, it's so true! I talk to my car a lot, she's called Clara. And the sat nav is called Wendy after a very bossy Wendy I used to work with!

Giselletheunicorn · 09/06/2023 20:01

My son is autistic. He does this all the time. Some of his anthropomorphised items include:

Pylons (he's named all the pylons local to us.)
Local buses
The badminton courts in our local sports centre (very random)
Traffic cones
Anything with a 'face' on it - eg 'face' patterns in tree bark etc

And his soft toys are almost as real to him as people.

I think it's an indication of a very powerful visual imagination.

Newnamenewname109870 · 09/06/2023 20:02

I used to but I’m getting better at not doing it because honestly I have enough anxiety and I don’t think it helps. Try being harsh!

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 09/06/2023 20:45

I turn cans the right way up so the stuff inside doesn't get dizzy, is that the same thing?
