Secondary school transition day - uniform policy help!

Dc1 attends a primary with a very relaxed uniform (branded hoodie, leggings, trainers). In the transition day letter the students are asked to attend in "their usual primary uniform" but that "all existing uniform policies still apply".

Surely I'm not required to buy formal trousers and school shoes for this visit? It's a good 8 weeks before she would then start, so likely the footwear would no longer fit.

Wwyd? Do I email in and say "heads up she will be in uniform but it's casual"? She is the only one attending that school from her Primary.

They mean the uniform policy of the primary applies. A child who goes to a non-uniform school would not be expected to be in uniform.

Yes, I'd email and say X will be wearing ABC, as this is what she wears to Y primary school.

Send her in her normal school uniform.

Surely the secondary school has had pupils from this school in previous years so would be aware of their relaxed uniforms policy?

Wear her normal uniform. She is abiding by the rules set.
I'm sure the school will be aware of the typical uniform for most of the primary schools in the area - I could give you the colour of most of the schools in my town.
I wouldn't contact school. Just follow the instructions- wear her normal school uniform.

Mummynextdoor · 07/06/2023 15:48

I would assume that by stating "usual uniform policies apply" they mean in relation to things like make up, nail polish etc.

I'd just send them in the usual uniform they wear as that's what they've asked for.

Stompythedinosaur · 07/06/2023 15:49

Just send them exactly as you would for their usual school.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/06/2023 15:49

Maybe I'm just overthinking Grin

It's the trainers that's worrying me, as I don't want them pulling her up on footwear on a visit day. I've only known 2 students in dc1s time at Primary who have gone there.

Her current normal uniform applies. If her new school is within approx ten miles, they'll be used to others attending with the same uniform.

BiggerBoat1 · 07/06/2023 17:32

They're not going to pick a child up on uniform - the whole point of transition day is to help the children feel less nervous for when they start in September.

Soontobe60 · 07/06/2023 17:34

Look at this 2 ways. She turns up in leggings, trainers and a hoodie and will likely stand out like a sore thumb. Is she confident enough to carry this off or might she feel intimidated if other students / staff comment? I’d ask her! I’d try to get her trainers that are black. Swap the leggings for trousers and make sure she wears something like a plain white t shirt under her hoodie in case it’s too hot to keep it on all day.

I doubt she’ll stand out like a sore thumb! Most primary uniform is like this?!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 07/06/2023 17:36

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz - you could ring the secondary school and check with the office - I’m sure no-one would mind. If it puts your mind at rest, that’s a good thing.

FatGirlSwim · 07/06/2023 17:38

All the primary schools round here are polo and sweatshirt or hoodie, And everyone wears trainers. I k ow some primary schools are full on uniform but I doubt she’ll be the only one whose primary is more relaxed.

She won’t stand out any more than she would in a different colour uniform. She’d stand out more in trousers and proper shoes here.

Lelivre · 07/06/2023 17:40

Mine was home educated prior and went in leggings t shirt and trainers. No one batted an eyelid.

LittleOwl153 · 07/06/2023 17:51

Secondary governor here...

Our school would state something similar for transition days. It's said to ensure that the kids come in uniform and don't try to pull some ridiculous current trend which will land them in bother - think massive loop earnings, mowhawk gelled high hairstyles, bright green hair, face paint/make up etc. There is always 1 who thinks their individuallity must shine through! Also probably trying to avoid the expensive sports branded wear - because schools don't need the hassle of that getting lost or damaged.

I wouldn't be expecting you to go and buy stuff that isn't usual uniform for your daughter provided she looks reasonably well presented and is comfortable in what she's wearing she'll be fine.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/06/2023 19:15

Thank you for the replies. I certainly don't want to have to purchase formal shoes 2 months before they would be needed, as her feet are growing, and a pair of formal trousers she would never need again.
