For all of your washing. 1 adult 3 kids.

about £30 a week. More when lots of sheets and towels. Even more if a service wash

Skinnermarink · 06/06/2023 15:53

When are washing machine broke it cost us £30 for two adults 1 baby, for the week we didn’t have a machine. Madness, and don’t get me started on the bloody time consumption involved.

My local launderette does a service wash only and charges by dry weight, broadly £1.30 per lb. A small load cost me £5 for just the wash (one king-size sheet, five pillow cases, a t-shirt, a tea towel, a bra).

It's been a good 10 years since I stepped in one and I was horrified at the cost the then.

Sgtmajormummy · 06/06/2023 16:12

I spent about 3 years taking my clean/spun washing to the launderette to dry. Only in the winter or post holiday, just to get it out of the way. At €10 and 30 minutes each week it would have taken me years to make up the purchase price of a domestic machine.
Lidl was just around the corner so I’d do my weekly shop at the same time.

The washers are a bit yucky, though. People use them for workwear and muddy rugby kits.
So yes, a full wash and dry for 4 people would be about €25 a week at the launderette.

Sgtmajormummy · 06/06/2023 16:14

Assuming you have a car. Taking it on foot would be drudgery.

cocksstrideintheevening · 06/06/2023 16:15

£6 per wash and £7 per dry at my local one. I do bedding there and two singles and a king set fit in one wash.

gogohmm · 06/06/2023 16:16

Cost £3 per load on holiday last year (I didn't use dryer) large capacity so did 2 peoples washing (only took darks for convenience)

Leo227 · 06/06/2023 16:19

I've just had to use one machine and it was £10 for one wash only.

Bemyclementine · 06/06/2023 16:40

Thank you, its not a cheap option is it?.

Also, when our washing machine broke down last year, nowhere (I tried 3 places) could do our washing for a fortnight!

Summerishereagain · 06/06/2023 16:51

A local ish food bank to me has opened a free laundrette after they discovered children were taking attending school because they didn’t have clean uniform.

SquashPenguin · 06/06/2023 16:54

They’re expensive. We used one a few times whilst our washing machine was out of action during our kitchen refit and we’re never doing it again!

IglesiasPiggl · 06/06/2023 17:00

At ours the large wash is £4, but the jumbo wash holds nearly twice as much and only costs £1 more.

No, it’s not.

It’s the rich that gets the gravy!

I only recently bought a tumble dryer at home. Because of a bed bug scare. I was concerned about them bursting into flames after a few scare stories I read years ago. What I’ve been missing I realise! not even including the drudgery of taking stuff to be dried at the launderette.

Paxed · 06/06/2023 17:08

And, yh, even that is cheaper than the launderette.
