£14 for ice-cream & coke from van at the Southbank!

I noticed that the ice-cream vans in central London have stopped having prices on the side. I should have asked them, but I never expected that two small Mr Whippies and a can of coke would come to that much!

Is that the genuine cost or was I ripped off?

A 99 is now £4 from the ice cream van in our local park(in a deprived area of Yorkshire) so I can well believe those prices OP given the location.

£4 in Yorkshire! I need to recalibrate my ideas. How does anyone afford to treat their kids!

Hmm - it’s positively cheap, compared with the 23 euros I was charged for a tiny ice cream and an orange juice in Portofino two weeks ago, OP!

A vendor on Tower Bridge tried to charge me £2 for a can of Fanta for my young son a few years ago. I said “I’m not a tourist mate” and got it for 50p.

That's cheaper than I'd have expected, given you had two ice creams.

I don't think they've ever had prices on the side in London. They are even more expensive elsewhere.

Every Londoner knows they're a rip-off. Personally, if I want an ice cream in town, I pop into the nearest McDonalds and grab a McFlurry.

helpmeexplain · 06/06/2023 09:13

How many ice teams are you talking @Babdoc ?? Clearly my ideas of prices are based on 20 years ago!

We have an ice cream van round most days here (south of Glasgow)
A 99 will set you back £2.
I'd have been shocked at the price you've quoted but at the same time not entirely surprised, it is London. I do think it's out of order to not display the prices though.

At Chelsea a small 99 was £4 (and it really was small). A woman bought two for herself and husband said "you'd better enjoy it as they've just cost £8".

Babdoc · 06/06/2023 10:56

helpmeexplain, it was one (tiny) ice cream and one small glass of fresh orange juice. To add insult to injury, I then had a terrible stomach upset!

Alargeoneplease89 · 06/06/2023 11:07

It's London so doesn't shock me, I would of gone to McDonald's or Tescos but I'm a tight northerner 😂

Welcome to London (£16 for a ciabatta and drink a few weeks ago. Admittedly a beer, but even so...)
