Where can I buy (real) bread?

Ok, so let's define real bread to be anything made with ingredients you could use at home: flour, salt, yeast etc. Not the added stuff you find on Hovis....

Is there anywhere that will deliver loaves of sliced wholemeal bread? Not fancy, artisanal sourdough, just a loaf of bread to make my kids' packed lunch.

It does have to be delivery though. I have a toddler and baby twins. Going into shops is a nightmare. I have a massive freezer, so could order for a week or two and freeze.

I'm with you on this one. Real bread is what I'm trying to buy too. I tend to find it in the "posh" bit of the supermarket if that makes sense. The bakery bit that looks like it's near the kitchen. I think they deliver it too but check. Milk and more deliver real bread too but it's fancy and very expensive.

Our milkman delivers real bread but it's a small local firm. Alternatively have you considered a breadmaker to simplify making your own bread?

ItsCalledAConversation · 06/06/2023 07:01

Our local dairy delivered bread like this, it was nearly £5 a loaf though!

We went with a breadmaker. Not sliced though.

'Going into shops is a nightmare'? What? I understand that doing a full shop or big trip to town is very difficult with multiple young children but going to a small shop is surely manageable.

I would ring the local bakery and place a large order, pick up (takes 2 minutes) every fortnight or something. They might deliver anyway.

A breadmaker is what you need, takes 5 minutes to add the ingredients, timer on so the bread is ready whenever you want it, job done!

Marthadartha · 06/06/2023 07:08

Bertinets or Jason's bread seems to have simple ingredients, but happy to be corrected if anyone knows better.

Bread maker and an electric bread knife to make slicing evenly easier.

Honestly, the only way to get the best bread at reasonable cost is to make it yourself. We have a bread maker. They generally have a dough setting as well so you could batch make bread rolls to freeze.

But, get the largest size bread maker you can. Either way you'll be making bread most days to keep up with your families needs, which is why I suggest rolls as you can spend a weekend making rolls and freeze, defrosting as needed.

Drosselmeyer · 06/06/2023 07:20

Our local baker delivers.
Milk man?
If you have a big freezer, buy a month’s worth at a time?
During lockdown I made all our bread. Once it becomes a habit it’s easy to build into your day.

Yellowdays · 06/06/2023 07:58

@wildfirewonder I think you have a nerve to comment on how another woman copes in getting to the shop with 3 babies.

Op get a bread maker. The Russell Hobbs cheaper one is fine.

CindersAgain · 06/06/2023 08:01

Sainsbury’s? Are you against fortified flour?

Their white bloomer doesn’t have anything odd in it.

Buy from a local bakery or use a bread maker. Supermarket bread is full of preservatives. My friend has a small family run bakery and she makes fantastic bread with no crap in it at all. It's so nice and I don't get the bloating either like I do from cheaper supermarket stuff The downside is it's expensive and only stays fresh for 24 hours.

I stopped eating bread a long time ago, not good for my joints but I used to have a bread maker, drove me mad with the stupid paddle getting stuck in the bread.

I think the answer to perceived problems with bread, is to eat less bread.

Sorry to be a pain. I'm hopeless at navigating websites and after posting about the death of Cranks, couldn't get back on Mumsnet. Someone wrote that they had posted the Cranks recipe.....I can't find it, can it be re-posted please?

These are nice but best toasted. Agree a bread maker will be your best bet, Dove Farms (also available at WR) has nice flours.

Chillilounger · 20/08/2024 08:40

Able and Cole do real bread and can deliver weekly.
