Persistent cough for 12 weeks

Hi there, I am just wondering if anyone can give me any advice.

When my daughter was a week away from turning 6 months old. She got a cough and was mucusy. We had taken her to the hospital as she wasn't eating due to it or having any nappies.
They checked for known viruses and nothing came up they assumed maybe she was going past having bronchialitis. We went back and forth to hospital, out of hours and the GP. And they all would say the same thing.. if she struggles to breath we are to help her. If she can't eat, give her 5ml every 5 minutes and prop her cot up so it helps her airways. We are told because she is happy and otherwise healthy there is no concern. But she is now had the cough for 12 weeks and no show of changing. Just wondering if anyone else has had this or any advice anyone may have. We have been back and forth since she the 13th of March. She was given antibiotics at one point. Which made no difference.

I would ask the GP about a short course of steroids though they may be reluctant due to age. Also it could be an allergic cough so ask about the possibility of a daily antihistamine to see if that helps

I would say that it's quite normal for them to have coughs that rumble on at this age. Both of mine used to pretty much get a mucus-y cough from the first cold of the season in November that lasted until May. That happened for probably the first 3 winters. Even though it seems like they had just the one cold, it was actually virus after virus every few weeks all winter.

If she really is otherwise well, no fever, happy, but just a bit snuffly and mucusy, then I wouldn't worry too much.

Yeah they have gave us steroids to give her before and we did that. Still no change

Hi there, I was just wondering where you left with this? I am experiencing the same with my 5 month old, he's had a persistent cough for 14 weeks now and I am so frustrated we don't seem to be getting anywhere with our referral for a pediatrician to assess our son. Started with a common cold, then into bronchiolitis on week 6 and now at week 14 he is still coughing daily but so wheezy and you can clearly hear his chest crackling 😕 I just wondered and hoped this has stopped for your LO and if so, how long did it take and what happened in the end?

Thank you!

She is now over a year old and still has it albeit not as bad and she's learnt to cope with it most days. They really don't care because she is reaching her milestones. We have been given an inhaler and spacer. So when she does cough and is wheezing we are to give her that. I don't think it makes a difference but the doctor said it might just open up her lungs a little more for her to get the mucus out. She has a throat spray like difflam that tends to help a little bit.
