Uncomfortable clothes and shoes

bellac11 · 04/06/2023 16:11

My god, all weekend my clothes have been driving me mad.

Yesterday, bra strap falling down all day, its always the right bra strap, its on the tightest setting, always falling down really drives me mad.

Yesterdays trousers, far too long in the waist to crotch size, didnt notice on buying, so walking around with the crotch all baggy and rubbing at the top of the thigh. Its partly a problem of not trying things on properly as Im losing weight and I bought them when they were too small to slim into, now the waist is too big even though the legs are still tight, uncomfortable all round, pissing me off all day.

Knickers, too big, falling down inside my trousers. Uncomfortable

Socks, invisible socks. I cant tell you how many of these I get through to find a pair that actually function as socks but are also invisible. Socks came off the back heel,, rouched up inside the shoe. Uncomfortable.

Shoes. Im meant to wear orthotic insoles to correct my position. This means I cant really get my shoes on with them. Went out today with the insoldes in (podiatrist gets very chippy when you admit you dont wear them all the time) - shoe half falling off despite being tied very tight because the bloody insole lifts your foot out of the shoe too much and then made the shoe too tight. Uncomfortable.

Please tell me Im not the only person who manages to get dressed in clothes that you the rage?

Sounds like you need to do a sort out of your wardrobe

Yes well thats all Im doing at the moment, every week I throw away more stuff. And the bra is new, a new smaller size so thats no help.

Yep and it bugs the crap out of me so I now have a very limited and completely unfashionable 'capsule wardrobe' of just stuff that I don't want to burn within 5 minutes of putting it on.

Now that it's summer I will live in primark short sleeve longline T-shirts and M&S Good Move double layer shorts. I have 3 dresses that are tolerable, but they all have small annoyances.

Where are you buying from?

I can’t say I relate to this

RaininSummer · 04/06/2023 16:48

I agree with struggle to find decent invisible socks and also with your insole issues. So missing my sandals but need to wear the orthotics.

NeverendingCircus · 04/06/2023 16:53

I sympathise with the bra strap that slides off even at the tightest setting. I feel like shouting at the designers: short people exist you know. Not everyone has whopping long shoulder to ribcage measurements! Can you add a shoulder pad to stop it slipping?

Take out the orthotics. No one wears them all the time for the reason you say - they are bloody uncomfortable. Wear them around the house when you can get out of them easily if need be.

Buy new pants that fit.
Get socks that stay up. They don't have to be invisible. Choose ones that work with your outfits.

NightOwlNotEarlyBird · 04/06/2023 17:08

I can relate to all of this but not happening at the same time. And to add, tights that fall down and the crotch ending up at the knees so difficult to walk (luckily dress/skirt was longer)!

Just a few things that have resolved some of these problems for me:

Brastrap - switching to bralettes or bras with racer back straps. I have narrow/sloped shoulders and regardless of how tight the straps are they would still fall down.

Knickers - not only size but material. Many of the silky "no vpl" ones fall down.

Invisible socks - get ones with the silicone grip at the back. Try toe sock versions (the ones with individual holes for the toes) if you're not opposed to it - they don't move around as much in your shoes.

Shoes/orthotics - you need deeper/taller shoes otherwise like you say, your foot can't fit fully inside the shoe. Also happened to me several times where they moved as I was walking and the "support" bit ends up in the wrong place so I'm stepping on it! Also, depending on your reasons for needing them and if possible, try to work on your foot strength by doing feet exercises. I've always had flat feet and over pronation, strengthening my feet has helped more than years of orthotics and supportive shoes.

Ollybob · 04/06/2023 17:29

Try taking out the original insole, any decent shoe has insoles that should be able to be removed.
I can relate though, usually work clothes.
Work trousers that just slide off the hips, low rise anyway so need to wear with a belt to stop muffin top and top of legs rubbing.
Wearing a bag with a top, it just rides up the top exposing my middle or back!
Wearing shorts that slip/roll up on the inside, uncomfortable!
Bras well, either uncomfortable or unflattering, I tend to go for unflattering these days 😂
Honestly a lot of these issues could be solved with better quality clothes but they cost so not doable right now.

MrsMoastyToasty · 04/06/2023 17:32

You can buy a strap that converts normal bras to racer back ones. (I have narrow shoulders and they are a game changer.

NellyTimes · 04/06/2023 17:41

I've got these invisible socks from M&S and they are fantastic. If that helps at all.

Sounds like some of your problems relate to being short? (Bra straps, trousers too long in body)
Petite trousers do help, although I have to shorten most of them, but at least they fit better. Bra strap racer back clip as mentioned by pp. Knickers- I'm still looking for the "perfect" ones myself!

Work2live · 04/06/2023 17:50

I have this issue with loads of trousers too, especially lighter, baggier styles that I wear in summer. It’s something I actively check for when I try trousers on now, otherwise I end up chafing horrifically.

I have started wearing cycling shorts/anti chafing shorts underneath dresses and skirts now and it’s been a game changer. I hate the sweaty thigh feeling in summer.

I much prefer dressing for winter 🤣

Quietlyhere · 04/06/2023 18:23

My bra straps used to fall down regularly until I used the boob or bust method and went down in band size and up in cup size. Took me many years to realise this was the cause!

Yes, typical it was all on the same day, it was just too much. I thought had thrown away the massive knickers but these had escaped the clear out and I only realised while walking around.

Ive got over a hundred pairs of shoes, always on the look out for that perfect pair thats not going to pain me in some way or another, got tons of problems with feet and ankles and these are new orthotics which I thought well I better get my moneys worth so have been trying to wear them so they have to fit in the shoes Ive got and its hard because so few shoes come with removable insoles. These are also very short and hard (I like the hardness but not the shortness) so yes they risk moving inside the shoe. I took them out mid shopping trip today.

What exercises did you do, I would rather fix the problem that way than wear these bloody things

I certainly feel thats the problem. Im 5'6 though, that is not short yet all my clothes and shopping for clothes make me feel short. I have short legs and a short body, not quite sure where Im not short. Plus I have terrible sloping shoulders.

I aim to buy shoes with removable insoles, they are not common. Lots (tens and tens) of my shoes are Clarks, they dont have removable insoles unfortunately. I have tens of Camper shoes, they do have removable insoles but to be honest Ive gone off some of them, typical story.

Yes to the bag thing, that always happens because I wear a cross body bag and it rouches up my top

Once I am at goal weight I will be investing in very well cut clothes but at the moment they only fit me for about a month at a time so I buy what I can at the time.

I'm quite tall and have the opposite problem. Everything I buy is too short. Long sleeves are a myth. Trousers at my ankles. Nothing is actually high waisted unless I give myself an ultra wedgie. Totally rage inducing

Coronationstation · 04/06/2023 19:10

Sports bra style bra with cross over straps or hook together ones at the back to stop straps sliding down. If you carry your bags on the right shoulder it’s probably a posture thing why it slides down.
I don’t believe you can have truly invisible socks that don’t slide down, they need to be just above your shoes to stay up.
I can only wear my orthotics in shoes with laces.
there’s reasons I spend most of my weekends in “active wear”!

I also find the majority of clothes are cut terribly.

Foot strength and healthy feet are a rabbit hole subject 😅

This video is pretty informative with the basics:
