School insist on black trousers for summer

Hi,

My son is in Y7 and so about to have his first June / July at his new secondary school.
the uniform insists on black trousers for boys even on sunniest days. This seems madness to me, but apparently they refuse to budge on the rule.

Does anyone have any clever ideas how to manage without the boys all melting? I have looked for lightweight school trousers but cannot find anything suitable.

thanks v much

My son never complained. Sorry I can’t help.

Scalottia · 04/06/2023 15:49

Good lord, what a tragedy. He will survive as many others have. Warm weather doesn't last that long really.

He will be fine. Mine are both the other side of secondary now but they coped fine in summer with their school trousers and a thin school shirt

Beekdet · 04/06/2023 15:51

The majority of secondary schools expect full uniform all year round. You'll find that many adults at work in June and July will also need and manage to wear trousers.

DelphiniumBlue · 04/06/2023 15:51

John Lewis used to do boys cotton school trousers, might be worth trying there.

rwalker · 04/06/2023 15:51

Many schools have worn black trousers since time begun

I’ve no idea how they’ve managed it but they’ve survived

jannier · 04/06/2023 15:52

All senior schools have trousers normally black sometimes grey.

BeyondMyWits · 04/06/2023 15:53

Probably be expected to wear blazer too.

MermaidEyes · 04/06/2023 15:54

He'll survive. My kid's secondary school wear black trousers and blazers all year round. Blazers can only be taken off when it's something like 30 in the shade.

WheelsUp · 04/06/2023 15:55

This is very common hence the odd boy turning up at school in the girls skirt becomes news.

Our school has changed the uniform rules so boys can come to school in PE kit after May half term. (Girls are allowed to wear PE kit too but they generally stick to blouse and skirt unless it's a PE day as it saves time changing.

LolaSmiles · 04/06/2023 15:58

Assuming you're in the UK, he can just wear black trousers like the uniform clearly says
Why does here need to be some clever solution. But him a pair of properly fitting trousers in natural materials if you're concerned about him melting in the UK.

Comedycook · 04/06/2023 15:58

Yes my Ds school insists on this too...it's pretty standard. Usually it's ok but it is a nightmare on the really hot days like last summer when we hit 40degrees. I was appalled that they couldn't wear their own clothes and had to come in in full uniform.

KnickerlessParsons · 04/06/2023 15:59

It's good training for when he'll have to wear trousers to work - and it's not that hot.

That seems fair and common sense. Especially recent summers where there have been plenty of 35-40 degree heat days.

This has always been the argument in favour of school uniform...get them used to formal wear for when they start work. But, the world of work is changing...by the time they're working, there will be lots of working from home and if in an office, casual wear.

TheFormidableMrsC · 04/06/2023 16:12

It's horrible, my son's school trousers are polyester and I am not permitted to find anything else as they have the school logo on the front pocket. I can't understand why they can't have smart shorts for summer. They are allowed to wear PE kit on particularly hot days but are not allowed to remove blazers without express permission. I just make sure pants and shirts are 100% cotton because that's all I can do. My son really struggles with this.

ShowOfHands · 04/06/2023 16:13

I think our students are better off in their black trousers and white shirts. If they're wearing natural materials, I think they're probably more comfortable than in the lycra/polyester PE kit which not only feels sweaty, provides less coverage, making sunburn more likely.

We have a shorts option too but zero students wear them.

NoSquirrels · 04/06/2023 16:14

Unless there’s some missing relevant info (specific needs/medical condition, living in a super hot country, etc) then it’s odd you’re even thinking about it to me. The uniform is the uniform year round. Most people can’t afford to buy extra summer term uniform.

noimaginationforausername · 04/06/2023 16:15

My 14 yo has to wear black trousers, shirt and black blazer unless the weather is over 28 degrees then he is allowed to take his blazer off. He moans and gets ridiculously hot but he's used to it now and there's no alternative so 🤷‍♀️

Runningonempty01 · 04/06/2023 16:15

My school allows black trousers, tailored shorts or skirts for all pupils seems to work just fine.

Comedycook · 04/06/2023 16:16

The UK isn't a particularly hot country but last summer we did have a couple of days where we hit forty degrees and this is becoming a more regular occurrence. Because it's so rare we have no air conditioning in most places so it can be pretty vile.

itsgettingweird · 04/06/2023 16:17

I'm so glad my ds went to a secondary school that worried about teaching and learning.

They were no blazers from May half term, often told to take ties off in school and could wear school shorts in the summer too.

Mostly the boys opted for trousers (they wore grey) and wore their shirts - untucked!!!!

When it got really hot they were told to come in PE kit which seems the norm for even the strictest schools round here since covid.

Jellycats4life · 04/06/2023 16:18

That’s the norm. I’ve never seen a secondary school boy wearing shorts.

Haribosweets · 04/06/2023 16:18

Think most secondary schools are the same - no shorts allowed here and blazers worn all day too
