Young teen boy's bedroom

My DS, who is 11 is going to be moving from a tiny box room to a decent size double bedroom in the next few months. I would like to make it special for him, as he has been in a tiny room all his life, while his sister has a much bigger room, and he has never complained.
What do your you get teens have in their rooms that they love? I'm going to keep gaming and screens out of bedrooms for a bit longer (they have another space for that).
I was thinking maybe some cool LEDs or something? Maybe an Alexa to control some of the electrics?
I think maybe keep the room fairly neutral, so the accessories can change with his interests, like posters or duvets covers etc.
I have asked him, but he really doesn't ask for much, and doesn't really know what the options are anyway.
Thank you for your help. Smile

Blue tooth light bulb with speaker - changes colour and linked to phone

Amazon do long strips of colour changing LED lights for under £20, my nephew loves his. Also the flock covered bulldog I got him from TK Maxx.
Honestly, give him a budget, take him to IKEA.

Thank you both. I like the idea of a trip to IKEA....we could by a bunch of frames, and a big rug.

Agree with keeping devices out of rooms, mine are late teens and still aren't allowed. (I appreciate this is a luxury as have alternative space like the op)

Best thing I bought was several large cork boards, then he can pin up anything of interest. We've had ticket stubs, photos , school notes etc. It is covered and a very personal link for him.

Also comfy things. Boys appreciate throws and comfy chairs, thick rugs, bean bags as much as anyone.

I would probably take him somewhere (eg IKEA) to have a look or look online (pinterest) etc at things and colours that he likes to try and involve him or narrow down what he'd like in his space.

I agree keeping it reasonably neutral is easier but if he wanted to choose a colour could you do a feature wall or a half wall in that and use it as a basis for choosing bedding etc?

Pick standardised frames and then you can chop and change any wall art as tastes change - eg A4, A3. So much easier to source affordable prints when you stick to these generic sizes.

Personally I'd let him have the LED strip lights but confine them to the gaming room, and choose a cool lamp/lighting options instead for the bedroom that give off a less obtrusive light in the evening.

I helped my SIL redecorate for my nephew recently and I think what he loved most was quite simple in the end - wall shelving so he could display his prized possessions and his Funk Pop collection. He also really liked some of the hanging pennant flags we got him for the wall - some personalised, some to do with his favourite things (eg Hogwarts house and sports teams) and a map of the world he can pin where he's been on.

Mine just started collecting funkopops so funko shelves are planned!! He also has a skateboard attached to the wall and some football shirts hanging on walls showing the backs

A big fluffy beanbag! My son loves his.

And the LED strip lights went down well too.

Comedycook · 05/06/2023 15:58

My Ds had a huge graffiti wall sticker of his name

Also a big bean bag is good

Lava lamp?

Some good suggestions. Just been in DS bedroom, he has shelves made from old skateboards which I'd forgotten about. And agree about flags with sports teams etc.

Thingsthatgo · 06/06/2023 06:56

These are all brilliant ideas. Thank you. He has a lot of fossils, so I love the idea of some display shelving. He's not so into sports, but I think he'd like a world map.
I'm so excited for him!

You may want to plan ahead. He will need a desk and space for secondary school books soon.
DD has a desk with three deep drawers for it plus a shelf for the bigger books for her GCSE courses. Pens etc are in a desk tidy on the desk itself.
Enough sockets for laptop/phone charging during the day.
I agree with display space. If he is a reader, add plenty of bookshelves as well.

Wardrobe - plenty of hanging space for coats/hoodies/trousers/shirts.

We have neutral walls with one side painted in DD's favouite colour as a statement.

I would buy a double bed, more space to lounge around.

SchoolHours · 06/06/2023 08:17

Decent desk and bookcase.
Bean bag so he doesn't have to sit in bed to read a book. Floor space/storage for Lego.
Our big issue in DS's room is lighting. A reading light for bed/bean bag.
Speakers - so he can play music from his phone in the evening (we have a no phones in bed room rule)

DS14 favourite things are one of those hug reading cushion things, fleecy blankets and lights controlled by Alexa. He's also into rocks so lots of shelves. He was the same, in a teeny room until he was 9 so instead of everything being hidden in boxes, he loves to arrange his figures, awards, little bits on shelves - he's always rearranging them.
