Walking holidays Europe

DP and I love walking/hiking.

Over the last couple of years we have had a couple of UK holidays - Snowdon, Lakes etc and covered a lot of flat/hills/mountains.

Next year we fancy going somewhere warmer (we wouldn't go in peak times as we don't have children still in eduction).

Does anyone have any recommendations for Europe - scenic for walking/hiking but we also love good food so needs to have decent eating options as well. Preferably places where locals eat not catered for mass tourism.

I second German Alps. I spent a few days in Tegernsee near Munich- all easily reached via public transport.

It's not the cheapest destination as so close to Munich but there is everything you ever wanted from a hiking holiday: mountains, lakes, hidden castles and well signposted routes!

We've done loads of hiking using Innsbruck as a base, because I like nice restaurants and posh hotels. This year we're doing some glacier mountaineering and some walking, staying in huts and a few days in a luxury off-season ski spa hotel, also in Austria.

Round Malaga and Granada, up into the Sierra Nevada is really good for walking with a lot of different scenery. The Canaries are excellent. Around lakes Como and Maggiore are nice with a selection of towns and North flat and mountains. It's good to have a choice of activities. Greece has some amazing hiking trails. They're not as well marked and maintained as elsewhere, but do tend to be quieter and more wild. The Lycian way in Turkey is also meant to be great.

Try Slovakia. Or I think you would like the Scilly Isles (hard to get in but really worth trying). Or the Azores are interesting.

Did you mean Sicilly? Smile Scilly is very nice, but you can walk round all the islands in a gentle afternoon, even stopping for a cream tea
