Pizza pain! Whyyyyy do I do this to myself?

As I get older, I find that too much wheat bloats me and gives me pain and heartburn. I can have a sandwich for lunch if I don't have any other wheat in the day, but I yearn sadly for my spaghetti carbonara dinners of yore.

This evening it was just the DC and I at home and I didn't want to cook, so I slung some pizzas in the oven. Half a small supermarket pepperoni pizza later, I am so uncomfortable and bloated 😭 WHY did I do this to myself?!? And what can I put in the freezer that is handy like an oven pizza for a quick Saturday dinner, but without the suffering?

Frozen potato wedges to be topped with chilli, beans, cheese etc?

on a side note if you’re just craving pizza, batter a chicken breast between two sheets of grease proof paper until it’s really thin, spread with tomato pizza sauce and top like you would a pizza then bake.

And pepperoni

Chips do this to me.
But they taste so nice that I put up with the suffering about 6 times a year.

It's so sad when good food turns bad.

I get on fine with chips, luckily. I was going to make some air fryer chips and have some cheese on top and couldn't be bothered. Woe is me.

Is gluten free pizza nice? I assume it is the gluten.causing my problems. I quite like the thought of frozen potato wedges.

My perfect Saturday night dinner is a massive plate of nachos. Takes a couple of minutes to assemble and then you can dollop whatever you want on top so it's easy to customise for different tastes.

LancashireSquirrel · 03/06/2023 23:15

I have this issue but it seems to be yeast, as I'm okay with pasta and other forms of gluten. It's just bread.

I feel your pain, OP.

SkyLarkDescending · 03/06/2023 23:20

Yes me too with the yeast products. I happily eat rice, potatoes, some bread products like wraps and occasionally bagels/crumpets. But as soon as I have a slice of bread or more than 1 slice (of small supermarket) pizza I am bloated like a whale and very uncomfortable.

The wedges/nachos sounds like a good alternative OP. I also sometimes find I'm really craving the cheese not the pizza base so I have cheese and crackers instead and that does it for me.

I'm exactly the same.. pizza = horrible left sided pain, bloating (and constipation)
I have IBS and diverticulosis.... but I LOVE pizza.

The good baker sourdough veggie one is the least painful for me (nice as it is but I add extra cheese and olives) Asda and Morrisons sell them :)

1stTimeMama · 03/06/2023 23:22

@GloomySkies shop bought GF pizza is mostly awful. I make my own using Becky Excell's recipe which I've found works well.

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 03/06/2023 23:24

Interesting how we all have our own good carb / bad carb moments.

I was told I have diverticula when I had my appendix out. I wonder is it related.

Sourdough bread is easier on me than regular, so a sourdough pizza might be worth a try once in a while.

I was like this. Gave up wheat and my whole body felt soooo much better. I don't even have a molecule now and it's easy once you get used to it. I have so much more energy, less aches, no bloating etc. Life changer.

Actually making pizza sadly defeats the purpose of Saturday pizza for me 😀

I am the same with pizza, also garlic bread and generally most shop bought bread. Pasta doesn’t have the same effect so I think its something to do with the yeast.
I used to wake up every morning with stomach cramps until I reduced the amount of bread I was eating.

Brunnera · 04/06/2023 00:01

I feel your pain OP. Mine has just got progressively worse since I hit 30. There's no going back to my gluten-full days. Never again. The agony of gut ache just isn't worth it. My stomach has grown it's repertoire into an intolerance of onion/pickles/nuts/virtually all fruit except melon/certain roast veg/eggs/cow milk protein/fructose/anything high fat as well as gluten. YAY.

It's fillet steak and rice for me forever 😅

A few tips just in my experience..

Shop bought GF bread is horrid

Not much better for pizza

G/C cereal/biscuits are pretty good

Lindt chocolate balls have gluten in them!

Some Fish and Chip Shops will fry their chips in GF oil if you ask. I'm fine with those.

McDonald's fries are GF! Yay!

Dominoes do a GF pizza. But not much better than shop bought IMO

Most frozen oven chips are GF but always check the label. Cheesy chips for you when the kids have pizza?

The baked chicken with tomato and cheese on top that a PP suggested is very nice, I can vouch for that!

If your intolerance gets worse, get very used to checking labels. You wouldn't believe how many products have gluten in them. I couldn't believe how many types of sweets are not GF.

Peppermint colpermin are your friend 🙂

Schar ones are vaguely edible in a 'this is what they thought pizza tasted like in 1985' manner. The Dr Oetker ones are better.

Beware wheat being added to frozen wedges (and chips, and a million other things where it isn't necessary at all - Aunt Bessie's are OK, ignore the McCain gluten free ones because they're stupid fucking money and why the fuck should they get more money when they're both the main culprit and the most aggressively marketed/restrictive deals so that most supermarkets only stock their brand).

However, as you've got an airfryer, if you can handle using a microwave of five minutes, a huge plate of wedges is really good - as in chop into wedges, microwave then airfry - far quicker than cooking from frozen.

Crikeyalmighty · 04/06/2023 00:14

Fish and chips for me! However I'm gluten free for last 6 months as post covid developed a huge intolerance to wheat all of a sudden. Neurologist told me it's very very common in over 60s particularly

DoughnutDreams · 04/06/2023 00:17

Schar gf pizzas are nice with extra toppings and cheese. Dr Oetker are nice but the base doesn't really feel like pizza.

musixa · 04/06/2023 00:28

Steak - quick and easy to cook and goes with anything on the side.

fridaynight1 · 04/06/2023 01:50

You are not alone OP. I do it to myself too.
Toast is my downfall. Warburton's toastie loaf to be precise.
I’ve spent most of today between bed and the toilet. I just can’t help myself. Despite the pain, I can’t say no to hot buttered toast.

Assignedtoworryyourmother · 04/06/2023 03:03

I hear you (all). Sadly cheese also wrecks me now and that has been even harder to bear than the pain of wheat in all ways. As a vegetarian I'm now on a very reduced diet and if I don't want to suffer stomach/bowel problems I'm pretty much a low carb vegan. Saturday night dinner is a source of constant misery 😢
