If you share the cooking with DH/DP

Do you have your own 'signature' dishes or do you have meals you both cook? If you both make some of the same meals, do you prefer yours or your OH's version?

Pretty much every person I've ever met insists their spag bol is the best. I have to be honest, mine is obviously better Wink The others all tasted the same despite apparently 'everyone' telling them all it was the best they'd ever had Grin

I tend to think that even if someone else is a reasonable cook, but so are we, if they don't cook it the way we would then we still prefer our own version? The only exception was when I dated a guy who was half-Indian. I haven't really attempted homemade curry after that. It'll never live up to his cooking!

We don't cook the same things. Anything pasta, vegetarian or baking related like pies I do. He does most meat or fish. And risotto. He makes the most amazing risotto.

BigFatLiar · 02/06/2023 18:02

OH is a good cook, much better than me, he's always done most of the cooking.

kokotheguerilla · 02/06/2023 18:06

DP actually DOES make the best spag bol. 😂 Mine is good, his is superb.

Yes, if cooking off piste we both have specialties we cook. Tends to be something that person tried cooking for first time, they stick to it. Otherwise it’s whoever gets to the Gousto box first.

My DS cooks the best spag bol in this house. (Despite my teaching him how to do it, so in theory it's the same as mine, he somehow does it better).

We each have our favourite dishes that tend to be things that only/mainly we make, but by and large we cook anything.

Polis · 02/06/2023 18:15

I tend to repeat tried and tested meals while my husband is much more adventurous. He rarely uses scales or measures, whereas I always do.

When he has cooked one of “my” meals, it has been better. Annoyingly.

CatMattress · 02/06/2023 18:18

Dp, bless him, asked me to teach him my versions of dishes like bolognaise and shepherd's pie so that when he cooks it's familiar for my kids.

The funny thing is that he made his own version of burgers recently because I hadn't taught him mine and I was too knackered to cook and DS preferred them and wants to learn the DP-burger, but not the mummy-burger because yours aren't as nice. Sorry mummy.

Ffs. 🙄😂

Lkgcsr · 02/06/2023 18:18

Mostly we cook different things and have our own signature dish.
I generally prefer DHs version as he’s better at cooking and often doing all the cooking takes my appetite away.

ReignOfError · 02/06/2023 18:18

He has about half a dozen favourites he rotates, plus he does all the fish/seafood dishes. We cook a few other things - chilli, roasts, curries - together, and I do anything that requires pastry or sauces, which includes spag bol, of course.

DappledThings · 02/06/2023 18:49

I do a good lasagna. He does everything else. He's much better at it and enjoys it. I loathe planning meals, food shopping and cooking so do as little of it as possible. I do the bulk of cleaning to make up my fair share of domestic duties.

Greydogs123 · 02/06/2023 18:52

My partner is good at cooking the stuff that takes time, like lasagne or a beef stew, so he cooks on weekends when he can faff as much as he likes. I cook in the week and generally do stuff that takes less than 40 mins! I think we make stuff that is equally tasty.

bussteward · 02/06/2023 18:53

DP has signature dishes. They are all bad. He also cooks the things I cook, and fucks them up. He can’t even make lettuce. However I cba to cook all the time, especially when it might be rejected by a child for spurious reasons (“I wanted to put it on the plate! Now it’s RUINED FOREVER! You never want me to eat ever ever again!”), so we take it in turns. I suffer through it.

I have particular dread for when he makes sausage pasta (either the Nigel or the Jamie Oliver). I don’t know what he does but it’s very wet.

ChiChaNaYubi · 02/06/2023 18:56

My husband is a chef so I rarely cook anything tbh! He loves my chilli though.

DeedlessIndeed · 02/06/2023 19:00

Very clear split in our house unless it's something basic.

DH is an excellent meat cooker (or anything remotely fancy) He likes going to the butcher and getting nice cuts, and doing "cheffy" things. He takes it quite seriously and is precise. It is very adorable.

Whereas I'm better at cobbling together salads, grains, roasts etc with random veg from the garden or fridge etc. I love rustling things up from the store cupboard. I'm probably more adventurous, but less likely to nip out for a specific ingredient and just "make do".

CurlewKate · 02/06/2023 19:31

I knew this thread would have some of those posts that infuriate me so much about men who can't cook....Of course they can cook! They just don't care enough.

Dacadactyl · 02/06/2023 19:36

I do 99% of the cooking, but DH can cook and is good at it.

He doesn't really have a signature dish and nor do I, but when he does cook I prefer his food. I think it's just because I've not had to cook it tbh.

MissyB1 · 02/06/2023 19:43

We absolutely do different dishes. He’s brilliant at his and I am at mine.

autienotnaughtym · 02/06/2023 20:51

My spag bol is better. !! I tend to cook in week and generally do veggie. Usually omelettes, Chinese rice, pasta bake, salad. Quite easy meals.

Dh does weekends - curry, Mexican, Greek, Chinese, roast, risotto

AlligatorPsychopath · 02/06/2023 20:54

We cook completely different things. The only thing we both cook is pancakes - I do American-style, he does crêpes. The kids prefer his. 😡

OhYeahDefinitely · 02/06/2023 20:55

We cook different things.

He makes good meaty comfirt food dishes - spag bol, chilli, stew, jerk or fried chicken - and Caribbean food. He’s also really good at whipping up a tasty Thai curry or stirfry.

I tend to make Indian-style curries, fish dishes, vegetarian dishes And a much better roast dinner!
