Why on earth would reddit delete this post about tea?

Grin A casual UK sub, I was amused by discussions about our cultural obsession with tea and posted the following. I have a lingering hope that someone here, at the very least, will appreciate the humour. It was quickly deleted after one angry comment and a slurry of downvotes.

Here it is:Proper tea should only ever take up space in a fine bone china teacup. Preferably with a matching saucer, or if you are feeling controversial, a mismatching saucer. The proper teacup is small, slightly wider at the top than the bottom and is essentially crafted of a fine, delicate material. It has an even finer, whimsical curve to the handle, through which you might only be able to slot your little finger, depending upon the size of your hands. If you have very large hands, you should stick to coffee, or else allow someone with tiny hands to assist you in drinking your tea.If it isn't dainty, it isn't tea!A small biscuit of the shortbread variety sits on the edge of your saucer, preferably dainty and in a whimsical shape such as a love heart or half moon. Chocolate would melt agains the cup so isn't acceptable, nor are those vulgar, contemporary biscuits that are generally oversized and will offset the balance of your tea time architecture.Tea in a straight shaped mug or larger cup is an unmitigated abomination. I don't even want to discuss those oversized takeaway cups made of paper with plastic sippy tops. To take your tea in these receptacles will degrade the experience - too much water-to-bag/leaves is the issue here, so the taste is severely watered down. The only way to fix this is to add more sugar, which again degrades the tea.I can recommend a variety of acceptable tea receptacles, available at various UK retailers...a touch pricey compared to B&M's, perhaps, but purchasing one teacup and saucer of good standing per year should soon amount to a nice collection of tea ware over time.

I can't see any humour in that, OP.
It just sounds patronizing and incredibly snobbish.

I'm English, and I thought it was funny.

Paperlate · 02/06/2023 16:45

Maybe they are fed up with posts about tea. Low effort and repetitive threads are often deleted from CasualUK.

notprincehamlet · 02/06/2023 16:45

Mod wasn't a fan of the tiny biscuit?

Well, for the record, I do not hold any firm opinions about tea in real life!

I too wonder about the male/female ratio on reddit. Have experienced some really hostile reactions in the past from the men on there. And I hate how everyone presumes I am a 'dude', urrgh!

god i love a tiny biscuit, i miss those you used to get with tea in M&S.

CasualUK is my favourite Reddit Sub. It is quite male heavy though

LittlePampelmouse · 02/06/2023 16:49

ooh, i dunno @Paperlate, casualuk is pretty low effort central.

This is true. But I would think loads of posts are deleted. There are usually a million threads about Yorkshire puddings a week.

Sometimes there's a gem of a post though that makes me laugh a lot.

foulksmills · 02/06/2023 16:54

You'd be horrified at my thick huge bucket mug of tea. I'm not English though.

True, I loved the fish finger posts. The endless discussions about which is the UK's worst town are a bit wearing (it's usually Luton or Jaywick like a stuck record!) Always feels a bit hostile in general tho on reddit uk subs. I know MN can be a choppy sea but reddit is a weird one!

I actually bought some haddock fish fingers on the back of those fabulous sandwich recommendations.

Stick to Mumsnet. At least some of us appreciate the humour and whimsy in that post. And even if we don't, it won't be deleted for whatever it was deleted for.

BTW I agree that proper tea tastes better from a proper, thin, tea cup. But you are wrong about the biscuit.

Well each sub has its own rules about what can and can’t be posted there. Did you break one of those rules?

My experience of the Casual UK sub in particular is there are no rules. Only the whims and fancies of whichever mod happens to be logged in. I've reported posts that breach site wide rules and been ignored. I've also seen both mine and other people's posts deleted for no good reason and when the mods are challenged they rarely answer.

Much like most of Reddit, these places become the own personal kingdoms of the mods and they won't explain their decisions to anybody. There's just no incentive or reason for them to respond to modmail.

I think some pp are being a bit harsh. It made me smile and I do appreciate that sort of humour. Maybe just the wrong audience.

LittlePampelmouse · 02/06/2023 17:01

That's going to be the title of my autobiography: the wrong audience.

INeedAnotherName · 02/06/2023 17:02

Well...you might think its funny but if you try looking from a male perspective (which a lot of reddit is), you are taking the piss saying men aren't worthy of drinking tea because they have big hands, are too clumsy for fine China etc. If most of those reddit men are builders or tradesmen then I'm not surprised it got down voted.

Its a case of know your audience.

The internet has killed irony. We are living in a very literal age.

I shall share 😊
I have many big mugs.

LittlePampelmouse · 02/06/2023 17:15

I remember a sub now, where everyone took photos of their tea and received compliments about it. That was a pleasant thing to see.

Yes your post was funny and lighthearted and echoes those advice columns of bygone ages, anyone who doesn’t get it is very obtuse and thick headed. Even an eight year old rough and tumble child on a farm who only drinks raw milk from the family cow could understand the humor in your writing.

It’s not snobbish at all, it’s the opposite, it’s a lighthearted jokey take on “the proper way to take tea” stuff you can still find today on Pinterest.

It amazes me how unperceptive so many people are. This is basic stuff. It’s frightening when you think about the important things that need to be discerned by those who cannot even detect mild humor and playful sarcasm.

Well i hope I can sleep tonight given I've likely ruined the day of countless burly tradesmen with huge fingers on reddit! Grin

They mostly drink tea out of Sports Direct mugs.

ForestLilac · 02/06/2023 18:13

But OP, have you considered the fact that yours might have been the tenth one that week? It might be funny but if they allowed every post to stand that wouldn’t be good either.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 03/06/2023 10:57

I'd say because it comes across classist. Might have got away with it without the B&M comment at the end.

Plus I disagree. Fine China tea is for 4pm, but builders tea in a mug is for 8am.
