Having a big panic about July weather (too hot/humid) on holiday in Thailand - talk me down, pls!

First time poster. Thought this might be a good place to solicit opinions. I realise there's little I can do about it now but we are going to Thailand in mid July for 2.5 weeks, into first week of August. Bangkok - Chang Mai - Koh Phangan.

I have suddenly got a big wave of panic over the weather. That it will be even hotter than usual (climate issues) and combined with humidity make it unbearable for the kids, especially.

Has anyone who's been in the summer please talk me down?

I've been in July - koh Samui, which is similar temp to Koh Phangan. It was hot but manageable

Popsispoppet · 02/06/2023 04:06

We went to Bangkok & Phuket in July 2017. It was hot as you'd expect but it didn't feel any different to Spain, Italy, Turkey etc

If you have air con where you're staying and a pool nearby you'll be fine. I found the sea too warm to be refreshing but a pool was good. You have to accept that you'll be hot and sweaty all over when you're out and about. Don't complain, just accept it. Drink lots. Your skin will glow and you'll look 10 years younger!

It's always hot there I've different times of the year. During monsoon season it's a bit cooler when it rains but still hot and humid

You'll be fine if you're swimming most of the time

MargaretRiver · 02/06/2023 04:48

It will be monsoon season so high rainfall but it’s in short heavy bursts so you can work around it.
The mosquito population also increases so take repellents

Ok, thank you all. I feel a little less on the edge now! Thanks

It's hot, but you'll be fine. Lots of places will have AC. Stay in the cool/shade in the hottest parts of the day I lived in India and even during the summer (which is properly hot), it was fine. I didn't have AC in my house or at work, but found it manageable. Shade, AC, cool drinks, swimming.

Seven elevens are your friends! Mini islands of air con relief!

Seriously, it will be wonderful, take it easy.

@faw2009 - Ha! Yes, I'm not adverse to sticking my head in a freezer

You'll be fine. You'll be hot and sweaty, and need to shower a couple of times a day, but it'll be ok. Avoid the hottest part of the day, and definitely stay somewhere with A/C!

Mossiebonbon · 13/01/2024 17:04

@stoptheraindrops did your weather fears materialize or was it okay?

Ooooo come on stoptheraindrops, spill the Thai Beans..... what was Thailand like in July? It'd really help others who are also looking to travel at this time, just like you were wanting. Would love to know.

I went for 6 weeks July - Aug last year and we only had aircon in one hotel - it was hot but fine and so so amazing :)

Dabralor · 06/02/2024 07:48

You'll be fine. It will feel very close and sticky by the afternoon, but you'll have awesome thunderstorms in the evening. Definitely take the strongest mozzie repellent you can and don't ease up on the sun cream if it's cloudy.

I remember sitting on the beach at Koh Tao in July and it felt like Scotland - it was actively quite chilly which was actually very nice! Well, chilly for Thailand. You'll have a great time, it's a magical place 🙂

It was great. I'd been several times before, but not for a long time (except to Bangkok). I loved Bangkok all over again, as did DC - so much to do and see - but traffic is appalling, so do stay near a metro. The metro was King on our trip. Chang Mai was brilliant - loved the elephant sanctuary, the bike tours, the landscape and the food! OMG, it was divine and cheap as chips eating locally.

Koh Phnang was great - we stayed on two different beaches which was a good way of breaking it up.

I did have a great time but honestly, I didn't feel the same way about Thailand as I used to. I preferred Bali. I don't know what it was - maybe I've just done Asia now and it's time to move on. Also, as an aside, their use of single disposable plastics is truly awful.

I went to Vietnam in July and it was absolutely fine. Lovely, but not too hot and sticky.
