Nice places to live near Chichester or Worthing

Hi everyone I'm looking to move to West Sussex. I would like somewhere I can have immediate access to off lead dog walks and rural views but also needs to have public transport links to Chichester college and a friendly, stable community..

My budget is £400,000 -£425,000 for a 2/3 bed house.

What work are you after? I literally don’t know anyone without work down here . Everything from entrepreneurs to self employed media types to casual gardeners. Everyone does something!

Ferring is pretty but it has no street lamps or pavements. Fun and quirky or weird and annoying?!

Objectrelations · 01/06/2023 23:53

@Novium need to have a look at Graylingwell when I go over in July

@Marchintospring yeah I get the underclass thing - it's like that where I am now - I'm in the underclass!!!

Latent looks really good I stayed in East Lavant on my first scoping trip. Love the look of Midhurst but not sure about getting enough work there.

Bear in mind the impact of Goodwood if you move to East Lavant. There are many, many, Goodwood events throughout the year of which revival and Festival of Speed are the main two but there are a lot of others. Roads are closed during some of them to all but Goodwood traffic (which is crazy heavy), sometimes for a few days, making you a virtual prisoner in your home some weekends. North/ mid/ west Lavant and the villages above are less affected, though it can still be an annoyance.

There are no shops in Lavant and it gets very tedious after a while having to drive every time for a pint of milk. But the views here and from the villages between here and Midhurst are stunning.

You’ll have Centurion way and a ton of fields/ walks right at your front door which is nice. But the world and his wife and every cyclist/ dog walker in the area has the same idea, so much so that lockdown was an utter nightmare as it felt like a very heavy tourist destination. I very nearly moved at that point, as the poor dog was so stressed with the crowds outside her front window.

I’ve been in this area my whole life, save a few years in the middle, and it has lots of advantages. It’s home and I know everyone. If you don’t want the whole world talking to you/ about you it’s not the right place but it is friendly as a result and people look out for you. There’s very little crime and it feels very safe. That’s a huge plus. I’ve never noticed an underclass but I might be it as our house is at the bottom end of your budget!

The scenery is stunning. But I have to say in recent years I am feeling as though the negatives are outweighing the positives and looking at somewhere less conventionally attractive and with more amenities and less tourists, such as the villages around Emsworth, or around Littlehampton, or even so where like Crawley where there are loads of parks to walk a dog (the nicest park in Chichester bans dogs, as do a couple of others and so do a good few beaches in the summer) and many more mod cons.

Feel free to PM me if you want more specific info.

Petworth’s nice. The park is good for dogs though you have to be careful and stay well away from the deer at certain times of the year. Public transport’s not the best though.

pcod · 02/06/2023 03:43

I'd say pretty much all of easy Preston is good for walks and then most of Angmering
East Preston has super quick access to the beach (it's a quiet one) and there's a really nice grass area that runs along the beach (but is separated from except for ways to get through) it's always full of dogs. there's fields and country lanes.

Objectrelations · 02/06/2023 08:24

@pcod there are some beautiful houses in those areas in the right price bracket 🙂

if you’re planning on starting a private psychotherapy practice in the area then I would consider a back up job. Absolutely drowning in private counsellors as the Uni runs a very successful degree course in counselling. NHS jobs are few and far between so most go into private practice. Unless you stand out (psychiatrist/psychologist/cbt therapist) I think you’ll find it hard to make a living from it unfortunately. Worth researching!

@PsychoAndDynamic

I’m imagining from your user name you have personal experience of this are you willing to share it? Do you think that this applies to the whole area or just Chichester? Lots of places have counselling courses so I’m not sure how it can be that different from other places ?

We live in a small village 3 miles outside chichester. I don't drive and the buses are good. Been hear a year love it. Pm me if you want.

Marchintospring · 03/06/2023 21:13

I actually think having a lot of the same type of service is a good thing. It’s where people look. Some towns have lots of bars or lots of charity shops or lots of beauty/ spas/ nail bars centres. It’s good for business to be in a area known for whatever.

You’ll be fine Op, there is loads of money in these parts and people like to spend it on improving themselves. You’’ll be in a part of the world where the nice beach charges over £10 to visit in the summer.

Its a fair point about Goodwood but it brings lots of places to a grinding halt.

@Marchintospring ah that's so reassuring thanks. I am quite anxious about making such a big move on my own so that is good to hear. I just have a few private clients where I am at the moment and have a separate unrelate- to - therapy job anyway but after I complete my MA in Psychotherapy I would like to move into working completely for myself at some point 😀

Yeo - south of A27 not great for 20 year annual flood risk projections.

Marchintospring · 04/06/2023 22:18

Work wise I really wouldn’t worry. Many of my friends have set up successful businesses 1:1 services. Heathy eating ( detox) , reflexology , Botox, Pilates the list goes on. Everyone is very on board personal improvement here.
Most places overlap in terms of clientele, making friends. I would say there is a an east west divide. Littlehampton Ferrimg is not the same as Midhurst Lavant because it’s a big county. But whichever locale you chose there it will be fine. It’s a nice bit if the world.
Also think about the geography. East access to Heathrow , Gatwick and Portsmouth ( under an hour ) really helps if you are that way inclined. If you are in a pretty village that you can only escape vis a busy road where you can’t turn tight into 10 minutes becomes dull quickly. Pick your street/ village carefully once you narrow a few down.

I can comment well having lived all over London and Brighton too. Can confirm Worthing is a great place if you want:
-A lovely quiet beach
-Beautiful countryside and walking nearby
-Friendly safe community, quite diverse and queer friendly
-Very good cafes restaurants pubs and bars (both traditional and also natural wines bars and small plates etc, craft breweries for a bit of pizazz)
-Good schools
-Leafy parks
-Decent town centre with walkable shops
-Three train stations(!) and an easy enough commute straight to Victoria/East Croydon/Clapham, and Brighton of course
-Decent parking (especially compared to Brighton)
-And affordable homes! I bought my three bedroom house in a good area for only 30k more than my one bedroom flat in Brighton-For us it's been a no brainer and we love it, we're in our 30s and lots of our friends are following suit.
-Best areas: Check it out in person. Personally we're near the station on a leafy nice street, Tarring (West) is also desirable. But the best way to ascertain is to go and walk around.
