Abortion and ethics.

I want to start this thread with the prerequisite that I think abortion should be legal and that I believe in women's rights, but I'm also curious about the rights of the unborn child and the pain and distress that they might experience.
I suppose, as uninformed as I am, I am 'on the fence' with regards to pro life and pro choice.
There is no doubt as to what would happen if abortions weren't legal... we know in the past, the practices of terminating a pregnancy illegally were dire and dangerous for both the woman and foetus... both could end up dead or stricken with disease etc., but I only know so much with my very limited school education on the subject. I have watched TV dramas that covered the subject; Call the midwife etc. but I don't know much more because you have be careful about misinformation on the internet, especially if they are from American religious/extremist organisations.
I think it is best to abort a foetus as early as possible, but life isn't always that straight forward for people.
What about the pain receptors in a foetus and its cognition?
Information is very divisive when it comes to data on that issue.
A counter argument: a small percent, something like 1.3% of foetuses are aborted 'late term'.
Thankyou for reading.
Ps. I would like to add that I have explained as sensitively as possible and I am sorry if I have hurt anyone's feelings.
Thankyou for reading xxx

Something I read elsewhere on MN 'as early as possible, as late as necessary' which more or less sums it up to me.
If I was to put a 'limit' it would be 'can survive independently outside the womb' but even that is vague. Some very early babies survive premature birth though with a high % having ongoing disabilities.
If a baby/foetus is clearly going to die when born anyway due to disability I don't see why a mother should have to keep carrying.

I've never been pregnant. Maybe my views would be different if I had.

Lets hope we don't get religious fanatics in charge like in various USA states.

Thankyou for not reacting negatively, I thought people might because I seem so ignorant.
Luckily, I haven't ever been faced with this problem and hopefully never will be.
I am very interested in ethics in general.

I don't know the stats or the biology of development.
I just don't see any woman with an unwanted or unviable pregnancy or a pregnancy that is life threatening to the mother choosing a late abortion lightly. A late abortion will surely come with a lot of soul searching and upset. If they still make that decision it will be for good reasons, I feel.

Is pregnancy choices really the place for this?
