My electric bill is £488.25

For the quarter.
For context, there are three of us living here
I never use the tumbler
I do not iron
The only electrical appliance I use apart from the usual stuff (washer/fridge tv) is a water distiller.

The shower is not electric.
Does this bill seem extortionate to you ?

How old is the third person?

do you wfh?

ImAvingOops · 31/05/2023 08:39

I'm all electric and mine was £274 per month.

cakeorwine · 31/05/2023 08:39

So:

How many units have you used?
What's your average daily use?
Do you have a smart meter to track usage and energy hungry devices?

For context - we use about 150 units a month - that's a flat, electric shower, me and DS, electronics but no dishwasher. Gas oven.

150 units = about 450 a quarter - so about £150

Plus standing charge - so about £45

Bill - £200 a quarter.

That works out to be about $800 AUD and that is what ours is now.
It's happening everywhere.
Sucks hey?

I'm in NZ and it seems high to me. I use electricity for everything, and usually have my oven on every day and even in the depths of winter wouldn't have bills that high for a quarter.

CatsOnTheChair · 31/05/2023 08:45

That would be just under £2000 a year, plus gas heating?
Sounds on the expensive side to me.

That's about £4 a day for electricity, some of which will be the standing charge so unavoidable.

Between 3 people the works out a bit over a quid a day each for the actual electricity.

I have a distiller, it's way more expensive to run than our Xbox per hour, all measured on a plug in meter. How many hours a day do you run the distiller for?

GiveupHQ · 31/05/2023 08:53

Key questions

is the third person a baby?
do you wfh or sahm?

VikingsandDragons · 31/05/2023 08:55

Well it's less than mine is per month in the winter and similar usage so I'd be thrilled with that as a bill for a whole quarter

Qilin · 31/05/2023 09:45

We are paying around £400 a month at the moment.
That's for a 4 bed house, 2-3 of us living here (depends if dd is home from university or not), and we have 2 electric cars.

Over the winter we have used more than we pay though this is starting to even out again now the warmer weather is here. Heating in less and the EV batteries are better in warmer weather so charging less.

Qilin · 31/05/2023 09:46

Though that is gas and electricity.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 31/05/2023 07:59

Actually if that's a quarter, that's not bad at all. Mines about £450 for gas and electric per month.

This. I assumed you were complaining about the month.

MooMooSharoo · 31/05/2023 10:39

That does seem high to me. Are they actual meter readings? If they're estimates, send in actual readings and hopefully it will go down.

Our recent bill was £261 for electric for 27/02/2023 to 19/05/2023 so nearly 3 months. There are only 2 of us, but DH WFH full time.

I did buy an Air Fryer before Christmas, so this is the first full quarter of using that. The main oven gets used once or twice a week at the most now. We don't have a tumble dryer either but do use the dishwasher 3/4 times a week and the washing machine 1/2 times.

We used 696 kWh in that 3 month period. How much actual electric did you use in that period?

Do you have gas for heating and hot water or are you fully electric? What was your gas usage during that time? Ours was 3,545 kWh and £375. DH does not like a cold house, so the heating is on for more and for longer than it would be if it was down to me.

Check the Water distiller to see what wattage it is. You can work out how much of the bill that is.

Also, check your other main appliances - do you have anything that's particularly old that might not be very efficient. I'm sure a 15 year old washing machine, for example, would be less energy efficient than a new one.

WakeMeUpWhenGoodOmensIsBack · 31/05/2023 10:46

I read you as meaning that you've got gas heating. If you don't have any electric heating, and no electric shower, I do think that's a little bit high.
My electricity was about a thousand pounds for the last 6 months, so about 10% higher than yours, but we do have a tumble dryer which gets used during wet winter weather, and an electric towel rail in the bathroom.

Softoprider · 31/05/2023 13:02

Thanks for all the replies. I can't answer a lot of the questions as my partner pays for the gas and electric, I have spoken to him about the bill. It seems he was being peevish about the water distiller just because it exists and he doesn't believe in them :) )

Our bill for December alone was more than £500. We're not on the gas grid so electric heating, and we have an electric car. Even this last month, when we've not had the central heating on, was well over £200.
Your bill doesn't sound too bad, tbh, when taking into account the kwh unit rate we're all paying nowadays.

Tulipvase · 31/05/2023 13:18

Our usage this month was 155 electric and 75 gas. That’s 5 people, 4 bed house. We do a lot of washing and do sometimes use the tumble dryer.

Husband works from home most days too. I would say yours sounds a bit high.

redheadcurl · 31/05/2023 15:45

£469 for gas and electric a month. I would be happy with yours.
