Do you hang washing outside?

Dh won’t as he gets awful hay fever, I do. And then people on here rave about upstairs laundry rooms? But how do you hang your washing out?

Outside on the line unless it's raining then it goes in the dryer.

MadCatLady27 · 31/05/2023 15:10

Yes I love the smell of line dried washing 😁

So much easier than having to rotate it over the radiators, as soon as I can start drying it outside, out it goes

troppibambini6 · 31/05/2023 15:25

No never. Don't have a line and really can't be bothered with the faff of hanging it all out when I can just shove it in the drier.

I'm aware there are many devotees of hanging washing outside. However, I've always been perplexed by this given the highly changeable and generally wet weather in the UK, as well as the fact that it's a faff and an eyesore in the garden.

Tumble dryer every day.

I found that a tumble dryer can ruin fabrics, even on low heat setting. One winter I used it a lot for T-shirts and most didn't really look that nice. DH wears T-shirts all year round, in winter underneath a jumper.

I had to dry indoors a lot more this March/April than other years but over the last months I had to run and get one lot in because of a shower.

My mum never had a dryer and dried outside all year round if it was dry and especially windy in autumn.

I prefer my airer to a washing line/spinner though as I like it to wander with the sun than having a big thing in the middle of the lawn.

It's not really a faff, it takes a few minutes, smells much nicer than a dryer and costs nothing.

We all suffer terrible hay fever symptoms here. Our washing is hung out whenever it’s not raining. Drying the washing outside doesn’t make the symptoms worse.

Why are you asking, “How do you dry your washing outside”? Is that a serious question?

Physalisosewater77 · 31/05/2023 16:17

Yes. Everything except towels and sheets. Meant I could sell on my DCs’ clothes in very good condition.

StormShadow · 31/05/2023 16:21

Yep course. No hayfever, I have time and we've enough room for a line and dryers, so it's a no brainer really.

maddiemookins16mum · 31/05/2023 16:41

If my patio is dry, my washing goes out - 365 days a year. I had bedding outside on Christmas Day last year (spillage caused by over excited cat).

Wexone · 31/05/2023 16:45

@FinnysTail it depends on what you are allergic too. I am allergic to grass and tree pollen and live in a semi rural area with lots of grass cutting at mo. So for me drying sheets and towels in the dryer helps my symptoms immensely. A friend of mind is allergic to rape seed oil pollen and now the farmer around her has planted rape seed oil in every filed. She is so bad this year has had to get steroids from the docs
For me i only have started hanging my washing on the line in the past week, everything that can go into the dryer goes, rest on a clothes horse. My excuse is my washing machine is at one end of the house (Bungalow), have no back door so have to walk all the way up the kitchen out the patio doors. Plus dryer is right beside washing machine so very easy to take out of one and put in other. I also live in Ireland where it rains a lot, plus my washing line is not in site of main windows ( rented house so cant move) and i do forget about it sometimes 😂it has been known to sit on the line for a couple of days

Yes, I draw the line at tumble dryers, the logic being clothes will dry if hung in a dry place or outside on a dry day.
Dishes never clean themselves.

Ok.

I’m not sure what you’re getting at tbh.

As a family we dose up on fenofexadine, steroids, nasal sprays, eye drops and all the rest of it. We all also venture outdoors, everyday. No choice when we have to work.

Drying our washing outdoors makes absolutely no difference to hay fever symptoms. But you do what you think is best - for you.

CrumbliestCrumble · 31/05/2023 18:43

Yep all year unless raining

I'm getting at that whatever pollen you are allergic to drying outside doesn't make a difference to you. where fir mine it does that's why I use the dryer. if himself cuts the grass he has to undress in the porch leave shoes outside and have shower to eliminate as much cut grass coming in to the house. windows are shut patio and outside furniture hosed down. I am suffering 35 years now with hayfever (they say its suppose to get better as get older but i must be exempt for that )dose up on prescription steroids (as immune to most now) nasel sprays waste of time like shooting water. Windows open kept to a minimum. wear my contacts all time plus sunglasses. shower in eve now instead of morning plus a air filtration thing in my bedroom at night. Still suffer though. I still get eveyr day walking etc.

GardeningIsNotMe · 31/05/2023 20:40

Drying your washing outdoors has no more affect on hay fever than walking down the street or sitting in your lounge. Pollen is all around us, particularly between March and Oct.

I’ve suffered from hay fever all my life (my DC suffer too). I have no intention of wasting money by drying my laundry in the tumble dryer when I can dry it outside for free. It makes absolutely no difference to hay fever symptoms. You either suffer from hay fever or you don’t. If you do there’s nothing you can do about it other than dose up. Summer, especially, can be cruel to those who allergic to nature. We get on with it the best we can. We have no choice.

RandomUsernameHere · 31/05/2023 21:04

Outside on the line excluding November - February (or whenever it's too cold to dry). Then I use the tumble dryer.

FinnysTail · 01/06/2023 07:51

@Wexone Nobody is stopping you drying your washing in the dryer. Crack on.

CrunchyCarrot · 01/06/2023 07:58

On the washing line whenever possible. Remember to brush your clothes down before you bring them indoors as they can carry pollen in on them. I found that made a big difference.

Wexone · 01/06/2023 08:09

@FinnysTail no there not. What people are saying is that is no BENEFIT , it DOESNT work and there is NO NEED for it. I am saying its recommended to be done and does work and benefit hay fever sufferers

sanityisamyth · 01/06/2023 08:18

I live in a mid floor flat so don't have a washing line. Everything goes in the tumble drier or on the indoors airer.

mondaytosunday · 01/06/2023 09:34

No I have a washer/dryer. I used to hang my sheets out (when I had a downstairs laundry) but my garden is a lot smaller now (London terrace).

loveisstrange · 01/06/2023 09:43

In the summer or well now when the weathers warm I hang my washing on the line but we have artificial grass and a few plants, but hay fever is t as predominant in my family as it used to be!
In the colder or rainier days I actually hang my washing upstairs coz it's the warmest part of the house
