Can I call 111 for heavy period loss?

Sorry to post again, I did post in women's health but no reply. I am a little worried but I don't know if I should be so posting for traffic, sorry.

Posted in women's health: I got my first period after 4ish weeks of Lochia. I had an emergency c-section. I had a little spotting for a day or 2 which was brown and then red blood which hasn't really let up the past night and then today. I am using a super tampon and a pad and I am soaking through the tampon into the pad in under 2 hours. I have now timed it to see how fast I am (exactly) going through them . I am just so shocked at this level of loss, is this normal for a first period?

Now the reason I'm posting again tonight is I put a maternity pad on at 9pm and I've woken at midnight to feed my DD and have discovered I've nearly soaked through the maternity pad too.

I'm just so exhausted and wondering if it's worth a call to 111? Or is this to be expected? Also concerned I'd be wasting NHS time etc etc

It's worth a call? You had an emergency section 4 weeks ago - I don't know what's meant to happen after but sounds like a few words from someone medical who does is in order.

With a newborn, you need to take care of yourself too. Reasonable to call 111 I reckon. Do it now, they can take a while to get back to you x

You could… it could be something. Periods do get heavier after childbirth though. Mine are heavier but shorter. The older I have got the heavier they have got. I hope I am at the zenith and they will end soon.

You can call 111, what do you have to lose? Worst case scenario, they listen to your concerns then advise you to stay at home and contact your GP in the morning. I believe they can actually book you an appointment in the GP’s diary, so you may not need to wait around in queues in the morning. That’s not you wasting NHS time. Alternatively they could send you to urgent support if needed. It is midnight so your options of medical help are basically A&E. just call them and see what they say.

Yes definitely call them. Can you imagine if a man had blood loss to that extent! Hope all goes well

I would give them a call to be on safe side. I don’t want to worry you and I’m sure if it was this it would have already presented itself by now but I had an emergency c-section, 10 days later I was bleeding very heavily. I was rushed back to hospital as I had retained products of conception. I needed to have a d&c with ultrasound a few days later.

have you noticed any smell of anything before this?

Until 6 weeks post-birth I could call maternity ward for advice, can you try this?

coxesorangepippin · 31/05/2023 02:13

Call maternity ward instead

I also had this after c section, about 3 weeks after. No smell but massive pain, bleed and clots.

Call maternity ward and take pics/save pads especially if large clots. Better to be safe than sorry.

Hey,
Sorry I ended up falling asleep for 3 hours. I've gone through another maternity pad in that time and it looks like I've passed bits of tissue. I'll be ringing 111 in a moment as the bleeding has gotten worse and I'm not feeling good. As soon as my husband is up to have DCs.
Thanks for your advice

You need to wake your husband up to take the kids to get some medical attention op.

PragmaticWench · 31/05/2023 06:12

If there's tissue you should call the maternity ward. Much faster access to the right staff than waiting on 111.
