Teen fashion ideas

My teen dd is a size 10/12 5’4” She has always had a bit of a rounded tum, just her shape. But the shorts and short straight skirts she has as an alternative to jeans aren’t flattering. I am not going to point this out - she is happy - but would like to suggest some things that would flatter her more. Any idea of where to go or what sort of things I should be suggesting that are in style for 15 year olds for summer?

At 15 I think she should find her own style.

Floraltears · 30/05/2023 21:27

My teen has started getting into clothes that suit her shape and she’s found items in new look that she likes, so might be worth looking there.

Floraltears · 30/05/2023 21:28

I should add, I’m not sure what’s in fashion as she wears what she feel comfortable in.

I agree. Unfortunately we are a bit limited for shops locally which makes it harder to just go into town and try stuff on. So I was hoping for pointers to online stores and styles that I could suggest and, if she liked, order so she could see different things and would suited her more. She is fairly ‘conventional’ - jeans and t shirts most of the time.

My 14 year old has outgrown her tomboy phase and now likes cargos, cropped tops and slouchy zip up hoodies. Much like many, many other girls of her age.

Thanks, we do have a New Look but she hasn’t bought anything from there that I can recall (she shops by herself with friends). Part of the problem is shops can be so similar so when a style comes out that you don’t like it can be difficult to find much else.

15yo here in the same uniform as above - cargos or baggy jeans, cropped top and huge zip up hoodie. If it's over 35° she may take the hoodie off 🙄

Can't you just go on a shopping spree with her? My DD likes a shopping spree because we both try on clothes that are out of our style/comfort and have some found things we love that we didn't think we would.

She is the most enthusiastic shopper of the family but that doesn’t say much! But a shopping trip with mum is sadly not her idea of a good Saturday, and trips with her friends (I reimburse clothes bought within fairly loose parameter of cost and need) have been the ones which resulted in less flattering outfits. Better buys tend to be ones she has found online and sent me links to.

As a parent of 2 teens my advice would be not to tell them something isn’t flattering, let them make their own choices. We are the uncool parents after all.

My eldest dd is a bit rounded too, has big hips and a large bottom but I gave up trying to help her chose clothes. She’s now at uni and wears some awful combinations but looking at some of the other students on campus they look just as bad. I think it’s trendy to dress how you want to dress, dd dresses for comfort and also likes to dress alternative and non binary. Being a teenager is about finding their own style.

Lovemusic33 · 30/05/2023 21:52

Both my teens hate shopping too. Though dd1 is getting better at it and has discovered vinted.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 30/05/2023 21:58

Alllll the teenage girls round here wear Nike Pros and a crop top with an open zip up hoodie if it’s cold. Or those matching shorts and crop top sets from Primark. That’s just what’s in fashion at the moment.

Urban outfitters
hollister
brandy Melville
lulu lemon
Victoria’s secret

that’s what mine likes anyway 😀

My teenage niece came back from a showing trip today with several long tube skirts and dresses and some strap oh tops. She went to Pull and Bear, Zara and maybe New Look

Rainallnight · 30/05/2023 22:25

*strappy tops!

Do you have to stay local? Her style will always be a bit restricted if she’s only for a small range of shops available to her. Why not do a trip?

Long tube skirts were a thing when I was at school! 😂

We have a theatre trip coming up which we could try to use. I’ll look to see if any of the shops listed above are near there - we need to optimise the use of the hour max before they are shopped up!

Why do you feel you need to tell her how to dress? Being a teenager is about experimenting and finding your own style, leave her alone, also stop judging your DDs body, 'a rounded stomach' I hope you're perfect.

Mine wears mainly run and fly dungarees and dresses or joggers and a hoody. She's also adopted lots of my old dresses that o can't fit into any more. Definitely not in fashion but she looks fab. Mostly. They're are some "interesting" combinations. But I only intervene (gently) if there is a chance of attracting ridicule. She's not the best socially!

RoyalImpatience · 02/08/2023 14:19

We had issues in shops rl and had fabulous success in on line h and m
Zara and mango which has speficic teens section.

My dd loves run & Fly dungarees and keeps pinching mine, she has most of the T-shirts too.
