Silver wedding anniversary gift

What to buy which isn't tacky? And not boring, like champagne. It's for my sister & husband, they're having a party at home. Are gifts expected? I don't really know the etiquette.

DH and I recently celebrated our 25th anniversary. We didn't have a party but a couple of people bought us presents. One was a nice little photo album with Silver anniversary on the front and a nice bottle of wine. The other was a voucher for a restaurant.

Perhaps you could buy flowers or a bottle of champagne.

Gift them something made from silver? Small vase, some silver coasters, spoons?...

SnappyDragony · 30/05/2023 21:00

Ok. Not up their street, I don't think.

Silver photo frame; silver anniversary rose bush, nice bottle of champagne.

TimeForBedSaidZebadee · 30/05/2023 22:39

Dh and I have our silver anniversary coming up. I've bought him this hand molding kit which I will spray in silver after we've done it.
Or this silver anniversary rose is nice

No- just no
cleared 3 family homes full of unused 25th silver tat

Think of them as people- not 25th anniversary

ReviewingTheSituation · 30/05/2023 22:53

Vintage port from 25 years ago. That's what I just bought DH!

blanketsforall · 30/05/2023 22:55

David Austin roses do a lovely one called Champagne moment - and it's a lovely reminder each year when it blooms.

WeAreTheHeroes · 30/05/2023 22:55

If they're into gardening a rose with a suitable name, etc. Could get something to go in a silver metal planter or pot?

SummerSimmer · 30/05/2023 22:58

Voucher for their favourite restaurant
Nice wine, not necessarily champagne as they may get a lot of that.

LocalHobo · 30/05/2023 23:00

We were given a dinner voucher for 'de Silveren Spiegel' restaurant in Amsterdam which was very thoughtful. Not sure where your sister lives, but there are many appropriately named places... 'Silver Linings' in London for example.

Tinkeytonkoldfruit · 30/05/2023 23:03

I definitely think just buy them a voucher for a nice restaurant or hotel, if you need to go down the silver theme put it in a silver envelope. Unless super, super confident about someone else's taste don't buy them knick knacks. Roses are beautiful if they are green fingered, otherwise you just feel guilty about watching them die.

howdoesyourgardengrowinmay · 30/05/2023 23:10

Something silver. Have a look in antique shops and fairs for unusual items, book markers, bottle stops, bowls, toast rack etc.

Unless they're knick-knacky kind of people, not this. Would you want a silver toast rack or bottle stop? I definitely wouldn't, and neither would DH. It was our silver wedding recently and thankfully we didn't have any silver 'stuff'. Only consumables, which was perfect.

HeddaGarbled · 30/05/2023 23:23

My mum bought me the silver wedding rose and it flowers every year and is lovely.

This.

We had a bit of a 'do' for our Silver Wedding, and said to people we were having a collection for a particular charity in lieu of presents if anyone felt they wanted to bring us something.
We did not want to end up with lots of nick nacks in Silver.

Floofydawg · 31/05/2023 07:14

Thanks for the ideas. The silver rose sounds good - she likes gardening. Definitely no to the random silver items, sounds like a waste of money.

I think it so depends on the people you're giving the gift to because I would love some silver particularly if it was antique!

I have a small collection which was my great grandparents & dh's grandfather's christening mug . I've bought things over the years like silver vintage candle sticks in italy or silver jug in Amsterdam.

So I would really appreciate something like that.

Floofydawg · 31/05/2023 07:49

@ValentineGreen that's very true. I just don't think that it's very 'them'.

ValentineGreen · 31/05/2023 07:53

In that case I'd go with something like a beautiful tree for their garden or a restaurant voucher for somewhere nice.
