Why go to the gym to sit on your phone

I looked around and the majority of people at the gym were sitting on the equipment on their phones. They might occasionally do a little exercise but then it's back to phone scrolling for quite a while. Aside from taking up equipment that someone else is waiting for, what is the actual point of going to the gym to sit on your phone? Granted it's more younger people but is it a sign that as a society we are just completely addicted.

I lift heavy and my actual set might take 30 seconds with a 4 minute rest if its a compound exercise close to my 1 rep max, maybe even 5min if it's a really heavy deadlift. I don't really have much else to do but use phone in that time.

Having given up on many gym visits because every station has a body scrolling and resting on it, it is really appreciated when one of them thinks 'I'm hogging this, I'll go and rest five foot away on the bench in front of the lockers'. Especially because once one does it, others follow suit until the functional fitness crew leap in and start dangling off everything they can't pick and and swing around their head

I do this. 😁 I do about 30 mins of cardio, and often thoughts and ideas pop into my head, which I want to make a note of or follow up straight afterwards. By then, I'm just killing time, waiting for my DH to finish his longer workout. I do a few weights, but find them boring, so I do sometimes scroll inbetween sets. I also record my weights on my phone, to track progress, so need to refer to that sometimes.

Other people seem to use their phone for music/video during cardio, but not me.

@TokyoSushi Not that gym but I recognise the behaviour. Don't forget the mirror selfie for insta story too Wink

@NeverDropYourMooncup
I ended up building a gym in my garage so I wouldn't have to wait ever again.
I did then have to build a shed in the garden so I had somewhere to put all the shit that had previously been in the garage though Confused

My phone has my workout programme on so I need to follow it, it also tracks all my activity and I need it to log-in to all the cardio and resistance machines.

Oh God, the mirror selfie in the changing rooms! What's that even about? Sounds like you go to a gym I used to go to. Definitely recognise the scrolling on phones sitting on equipment behaviour.

I don't go any more - set up some equipment at home instead but I still follow the gym on Instagram and I cringe every time I see a post.

I have a friend I go to the gym with so we can switch and one rests while the other does their sets, but if she can't go and I'm on my own I sit on my own for the 2 minute rest between sets, yes. Mine is about 2 mins lifting then 2 mins rest give or take.
