Audiobooks for 11year old

Looking for recommendations. DD currently has Harry Potter on repeat and has done for at least a year. I'd like a change! We need to cover 20 hours in the car over the summer, so don't mind buying a good book. Or good podcasts for her to listen to at home.

Terry Pratchett has some great books, some specifically aimed at children but also the Discworld which would be good from that age too. I've been introducing my 10 and 12 yo to them, currently listening to the Wee Free Men and Equal Rites.

I was going to suggest Terry Pratchett too. The Tiffany Aching series, which starts with Wee Free Men is a good one for kids. If you're doing the other Discworld books look for the newest recordings with Bill Nighy doing the footnotes and Peter Serafinowicz as Death. They have different main narrators depending on the book.

A Series of Unfortunate Events or His Dark Materials

Other Stephen Fry narrated options could work like - Mythos, Sherlock Holmes, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Although maybe a little old depending on what she enjoys other than HP.

Everything I was going to say has been mentioned. DD(11) also still likes Paddington.

Both DC love Cabin Pressure (Radio 4), but more for long journeys than bedtime. It got us to Orkney and back last summer.

How did I forget Cabin Pressure?! Ds quotes Skip or Arthur almost daily 😂

My son liked the Percy Jackson series at around that age.

CarryOnThen · 30/05/2023 16:44

I found the Percy Jackson books painful to listen to if it's going to be just generally on in the car rather than headphones.

Podcast wise, The Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry on BBC is brilliant. Funny, interesting and happily pass the time. There's a billion seasons, the episodes are longer on the more recent ones.

Cornelia Funke's Inkheart series

My DDs loved the Murder Most Unladylike series and Enola Holmes books, then they moved on to Agatha Christie novels. They enjoyed The Explorer, Howl's Moving Castle and the sequels, Girl of Ink and Stars, Wonder, The Secret of Platform 13 and the London Eye and Guggenheim mysteries.
At 12 DD1 listened to Hunger Games and Noughts and Crosses but your DD might be too young.
They enjoyed reading Miss Peregrines School for Peculiar Children at that age but sadly the audio books are awful.

Tailrunner · 30/05/2023 17:25

Just realised some of these might be too young, sorry. My DDs often listened together so the books had to be suitable for both and DD1 was happy with 'easy stories' as she called them on audiobook as she listened while doing other things.

I'm currently listening to Anne of Green Gables with my ten-year-old dgd and we love it
