Provera to delay period - dosage doesn’t seem right

Has anyone taken Provera 10mg to delay a period? Can you recall the dosage?

I asked the GP and was prescribed 20 tablets for a 7-day holiday (GP asked how long it was) and I’ve just noticed that I’ve been prescribed 10mg tablets and instructions are “Two to be taken daily three days before expected onset of menstruation.”

This didn’t seem right to me and according to online Independent Phamacy UK a 7-day delay should be 30 tablets and two tablets to be taken x3 per day.

I’m already on holiday and I can feel my period ‘brewing’ in my abdomen and have realised this dosage must be wrong and it’s not enough to stop a period. I’m already outside the UK so it’s too late now to query/get more tablets if it’s wrong. I have shocking periods sometimes due to perimenopause and feeling really cross right now, especially as we’re at an all-inclusive resort and everyone is swimming etc.

Might add that the medicine leaflet says nothing about usage for period delay.

My dosage was 1 tab 3 times a day

One three times a day. So 21 for a week, but 20 will do.

Provera doesn't get rid of pre period symptoms, so you may feel like it's coming on all week. And you may bleed through. And it increases your chance of a blood clot.

Unless your period is awful and lasts all week, you might feel better just to deal with the period than the bloating, aches etc?

Sorry, just realised your periods are awful.

Provera isn't guaranteed to work. The GP should have explained to you?

Coffeeforus · 30/05/2023 10:23

@ohmustyou the GP didn’t say anything about it all. I think I will start taking it 1 x 3 times per day.

I need to take maximum doses of Transexamic acid, ibuprofen and paracetamol for the first 3-4 days of a period so I wanted to avoid that (as even all those tablets don’t cut out all of the feeling her really like rubbish etc), which the GP knew. I’m so on edge and upset if I end up with a full-blown period on this holiday, our first holiday outside the UK since the pandemic 😤

I'm so sorry- that's rotten. I was like this, and a mirena has been life changing. Provera can be very hit and miss.

Just about to get this...pretty much in same boat. Possible perimenopause and rubbish heavy periods. Did you take it, did it work?
We're also about to have our first abroad holiday, with pool etc since 2019!! Really don't want my period ruining it!!!
