Large bedspread or alternative duvet for the summer?

callmesophia · 30/05/2023 08:20

Well aware that this is an incredibly boring post but I am curious to know what alternatives people use in the summer months instead of a duvet.

A large bedspread, or throw? Do thin coverless duvets exist?

I am going to be massively pregnant (kid number 4) during the hottest months and feeling too hot in bed already. Every year I moan about how hot and thick our duvet is; a super king duck feather thing. And I never change it because I think what's the point for such a short amount of time.

I have a 2 tog duvet

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 30/05/2023 08:27

we use a lighter weight wool duvet. Wool is great at regulating temperature and keeping you cool as well as warm. If it’s really really hot, just a thin blanket or a duvet cover as I like to feel the weight of a covering on me - and a sheet just isn’t enough weight.

Right O, will have a look. Thanks

I just use a top sheet. My flat is crazy warm though.

Roselilly36 · 30/05/2023 08:29

Many congrats OP. We start the summer with a coverless duvet, that is summer weight, when it gets too hot for that, we just have a duvet cover on the bed without the duvet inside, works for us.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 30/05/2023 08:32

We have thin quilted throw which we use in summer. When it's really hot, DH decants to the spare room so that I can have the fan on which he hates.

Xrays · 30/05/2023 08:35

We have a quilted throw from Next - I don’t have the link but the last time I checked there’s only one sort they do in their own brand. We use that over the top of our winter duvet in winter and then on its own in the summer.

Jins · 30/05/2023 08:37

I’ve used an arc-chill cooling blanket or duvet for the last couple of summers.

Redpriestandmozart · 30/05/2023 08:37

When I visit family in Canada they use what they call a comforter in summer months, like a quilted lighter weight thin duvet, patterned but without a cover. I have brought a few home over the years but never managed to get exactly the same thing here. I have bought quilted throws from Bedeck they are thinner but work ok on sweltering nights. My husband swears that a comforter is just a 4 tog duvet but it seems lighter. Lidl usually sells a thin duvet in the summer that isn't heavy or thick.

M0rT · 30/05/2023 08:40

M&S do a 1 tog washable duvet that you don't need a cover for.
I use it in the summer and it's so thin it can be washed and dried in a day.
If it's really hot I just use a sheet, for some reason I need something to pull over me even when it's boiling!
Best of luck with your pregnancy 🍀

golddustwomen · 30/05/2023 08:40

We get rid of the duvets all together and just use the sheet. Our house is hell during the peak of summer.

callmesophia · 30/05/2023 09:34

This has thoroughly blown my mind. So many options. Thanks

We have woolen duvets all year round, they are really good at helping to regulate the temperature. In winter I add a fleece blanket if it gets really cold.

DH takes the duvet out and just sleeps under the cover if it gets really hot. We actually have two single duvets as we are both duvet hoggers and I love it warm, DH runs hot and throws everything off.

FMW · 30/05/2023 12:58

1 tog duvet from M&S. Coincidentally I have just collected one.

magnolia1997 · 30/05/2023 13:00

We have a king size flannelette sheet which is sort of warm and cool at the same time.

DRS1970 · 30/05/2023 13:03

We use a thinner duvet for summer, and just a top sheet on the very hot days.

ANewAdventure · 30/05/2023 13:08

Cotton quilts here for summer. I sleep better with something weighty enough to snuggle under, but they’re nice and cool being cotton.

Id also look at Night Owl Coverless duvets. We have one for one child, I’d love to replace all our bedding with them!

JorisBonson · 30/05/2023 13:09

A super king flat sheet and a thin blanket. I physically can't sleep without a cover on me which is crap in the height of summer!

Hazelnuttella · 30/05/2023 13:10

2.5 tog feather duvet here… can’t sleep with just a sheet, it doesn’t feel right.

SomethingNastyInTheGenePool · 30/05/2023 13:13

We have a selection of cotton kantha quilts. There are loads on Etsy. You have to check whether you’re just getting one that’s a single, quilted layer of fabric or one with actual cotton filling (I prefer the latter, but if you want something lighter, but slightly heavier than a sheet, the single-layered type could
work).

NotMeNoNo · 30/05/2023 13:16

you want an oldfashioned type of quilt - thin layer wadding between cotton fabric top and bottom https://www.laredoute.co.uk/ppdp/prod-350159698.aspx?dim1=1

The sort of patchwork quilt that quilting enthusiasts make https://amzn.eu/d/ja8gWnK

Bluebells1970 · 30/05/2023 13:20

I've got a white company bedthrow, the old fashioned cotton type and we just use this with a sheet underneath. It's heavy enough to feel that you've got something on you, if that makes sense, but it's not warm at all.

VillageLite · 30/05/2023 13:22

We just use our winter brushed cotton duvet cover with no duvet inside, it’s a fair bit heavier than just a sheet, so I find it more comfortable.
It has little fir trees as the pattern, which isn’t very summery!

ginghamstarfish · 17/07/2023 20:52

I have a cotton sheet plus thin fleece blanket. Used to live in Turkey, and for summer they have nice cotton bedspreads which have a kind of soft waffle texture, with a bit of weight but cool, and they're great. Called a pike (pee-kay).
