How many hours of sleep do your primary aged children get?

And what year are they in?

Bedtimes feel like they need adjusting but I'm not sure less sleep would be good for them, so I'm curious how many hours other children sleep.

I have an 8 year old who sleeps roughly 8pm until 6.30/7am.
One weekday evening is closer to 9pm due to an activity she does.

roses2 · 29/05/2023 21:34

Year 2 - 9/10 hours mid week. 10 hours on week ends
Year 5 - 8/9 hours. 9/10 hours on week ends

Cupcakegirl13 · 29/05/2023 21:35

10 year old 9/10 hours
8 year old 10/11 hours
5 year old 11/12 hours

7 year old goes to bed on school nights anytime between 7.30 and 8.30. Up at 6.45. Stays up a bit later at weekends and wakes about 7.30, but can be tired so we are always conscious of ensuring she has enough sleep.

4 year old DS (starts school in Sept) is a different ballgame! Despite our efforts sometimes is a live wire and it's not uncommon for him to be awake until 10.30! He'll get up at 6.45 with no issues. It seems he just doesn't need as much sleep as his sister.

I think you just have to go with your judgement about what is best for your child.

10 year old gets 9 or 10 hours but is an early riser so can be less some days.
8 year old gets 9 hours on school nights and 10+ on weekends. Just doesn't fall asleep until 10pm ish no matter what.

11 year old bed time is 830, although on days she has activities or weekend it's often closer to 930. Alarm is set for 615, at weekend she will often sleep in til 8. She always complains she's tired and simultaneously it's not fair that she has the earliest bedtime in her class!

Reception - 7.30-7.30, 12hrs
Year 2 - 7.30-5.30, 10hrs

Putting the eldest to bed later just means he gets less sleep, he's almost always awake before six especially on lighter mornings.

Giselletheunicorn · 30/05/2023 07:08

9 year old, lights out at 8:30 and up at 7am.

bluechameleon · 30/05/2023 09:55

8yo 9.5-10hrs, 5yo 10-10.5hrs

MathsNervous · 30/05/2023 09:56

11 to 12 hrs each night. 7yo and 5yo

Thank you for these answers. I suspect mine don't get enough sleep sometimes and these answers confirm others sleep more.
I'm reluctant to cut another hour because I'm sure it must affect children health and growth wise if they don't have enough sleep? But at the moment they just lay in bed fidgeting or reading for an hour so they're not getting the hours anyway!

Don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if they just genuinely need less sleep than others.
Not tired at school, not tired close to bed time, but still tired and slow in the mornings.

6 yr old, Yr1. Would sleep 8 til 7. Has later night at weekend.7yr old yr 3 would sleep 9 til 6.30 they share a room though so youngest tends to stay up, or oldest is awake for ages.

Phos · 30/05/2023 11:57

6 year old in year 1. During week goes to sleep anywhere between 8 and 9, gets up at 7. Weekends goes to bed later and wake time shifts accordingly. I suspect she’s at the lower end of sleep needs as she always was as a baby and toddler.

Freshlycutgrasss · 30/05/2023 12:00

5 year old - 10ish hours per night

coxesorangepippin · 30/05/2023 13:06

Mine are 6 and 9

They get around 11 hours

I don't feel it's enough but can't put them to bed any earlier really!

MeinKraft · 30/05/2023 13:09

6 year old goes to sleep around 9 and sleeps until about half 7 usually so 10-11 hours. Once or twice a week he'll sleep in until 8 or half 8.

Minikievs · 30/05/2023 13:33

9.5 year old (year 4) gets 9.5 hours sleep. That's weekdays and weekends as weekends bedtime is pushed a bit later but wake up is also a bit later.

LBOCS2 · 30/05/2023 13:37

7yo (y2) gets between 11-12hrs
10yo (y5) gets about 9 hours; she struggles to fall asleep in the evening.

It seems to be about right for them.
