Tips for regular long haul travel?

It looks like I’m about to face a period of long haul travel over several months. I’m fortunate enough that most (but not all) will be business class but I’m keen to know what to invest in/remember.

Specifically…

I’d like new hand luggage. I don’t need something to cram a full holiday outfit in: this is just something I can happily carry around an airport with all I need for a flight. I don’t want a back pack and quite like the organisational aspect of the Mia Tui Jennie but don’t love the look of it.

Should I buy socks, eye masks and ear plugs or rely on the blessings of business class?

I’m also keen to get new comfy layers for the flight. A while ago I invested in Hush harem joggers but tbh found them a bit less “smart” than I’d hoped (accepting I don’t need to be smart on a flight). Maybe it’s because I’m plus size (18?). So specific items and brands welcomed.

Lastly, slip on shoes seem recommended? Any brands people love?

Any and all recommendations on the specifics of the above and more general thoughts welcome!

Cable tidy from stackers - small or larger option’s depending on what you need. Saves forgetting kindle charger or something. Buy double and leave the cables packed

When I fly long haul, it’s really just joggers or leggings and a t shirt and hoodie. Definitely comfy. I wear trainers at the airport and then onboard, take them off and use sliders for walking about the plane.

In my bag I take wipes to wipe everything down, lip salve, hand cream and a facial moisturiser. I also take a toothbrush and toothpaste. make up is off before I fly. I’ve done business class before and I’ve been given an amenities bag. Usually they have basics in them but it will depend on what brand as if I’ll use them. All provide socks, ear plugs and an eye mask IMO. I don’t use them though, never have. Some airlines provide PJs.

Do you know who you are likely to fly with? Tonnes of business class reviews on YouTube that will show you seats, amenity bags, food etc. you can lose hours watching!

Also, I take a charger. Most planes have a usb charger now. If not, take a power bank. Also a big bottle of water.

I take my own eye mask when I fly because I prefer silk and the business class ones (depending on airline!) aren't silk.

As PP I wear trainers in the airport and pop sliders on when on the plane as it's easy (I wear ugg / crocs sliders as they're soft and comfy but also super light to carry in the hand luggage).

In my bag I take makeup remover, moisturiser, eye and face masks, toothbrush and toothpaste etc. Makeup gets taken off after take off, teeth are brushed as and when needed (prefer my own toothbrush and paste!) and I wear the face masks during the flight because it keeps my skin hydrated. I wear heatless curl socks too now, so when I get off the plane my hair is still looking good 😂

Bag wise, I have a samsonite hand luggage which has lasted me for years, it's got four wheels so it's so easy to take about. I then have a tote style bag (think Dior book bag or Chloe woody) with an organiser inside for all of my Knick knacks. They stack on the suitcase so I can just roll them around together and I find the tote with organiser super easy to have everything accessible but not messy.

Outfit wise I'm sorry I never go smart for the plane, just lululemon leggings or similar, t shirt or linen shirt and maybe a scuba jumper or something to layer if needed!

I recently flew business class and all the passengers wore nice looking lounge/sports wear.

I've spent way more time doing long haul for work than I care to think about. A good eye mask (curved/shaped), and ear plugs (for me, Mack's silicone every time) are non negotiable essentials in my bag along with a big scarf. I can't be arsed with dressing up, and don't care what I look like at either end, so either leggings, long vest and zip up hoodie or jersey maxi with fold top, t shirt, and zip up hoodie.
I go on and off with compression socks, but as I'm in economy they are a necessity on very long flights and I prefer proper socks not the ones sold as flight socks which dig in.
Shoes wise, any thing which you will wear on the trip which are adjustable and soft. I usually wear my trainers
I always have a charger block, multi-way charger cable, and a basic toiletry/underwear set in my hand luggage
For a bag, I have my laptop in a backpack, and the Jennie. It is so damn practical for travel, you can sling it on the floor without worrying, everything is findable, and the outside pocket is perfect for your passport. I can't recommend it enough

I don't travel for work but travel a fair bit and DH flies on an almost weekly basis for work & pleasure.
A lot of our travel is to/from the US and the standard wear is jeans, casual shirt, jumper/hoodie or suit jacket if needed and trainers.
I am plus size and have very stretchy denim look trousers from Lands End, always wear trainers, a nice comfy top and bra, cardigan, fleece or full zip hoodie, depending on the season, but never an over the head jumper as the static build up would make my hair go wild.
A scarf, my own BOSE noise cancelling headphones, my loaded iPad, a neck pillow (unless I am flat seat in business) and a good sleep mask. Short haul I may only take my airpods.
I always take a wheeled cabin case for my clothes and laptop/files and then usually a longchamp le pilage with what I need for the flight

I just bought a Pom Pom bag. I swear to God herself that's just organised the shit out of me flying and life in general really.

A la Pliage for laptop, book and magazines (old school) sliders, socks and a poncho. Moisturiser and toothpaste.

Hoody, harems, trainers check

YY to duplicates of cables and toiletries so you can leave them packed between visits

Use the hotel laundry so your luggage in packed with clean clothes ready for the next trip and avoid having mountains of washing to do at home

Take perfume/toilette water to spray in your room to help it feel familiar

Drink lots of water.

CMOTDibbler · 30/05/2023 14:28

An airtag to put in your checked bag so you know where it is (its nice to know its made its way to the same place as you).
A really good understanding of your company travel/expenses policy, the travel insurance, and medical cover. Ours change sometimes and we once found our ransom and kidnap insurance no longer covered very much at all
An insulated cup like a Contigo so you have a cold drink wherever you are. I fill mine up with cold water in the lounge so whenever I need I have a nice cold drink, and equally useful in the hotel/ office when away

I prefer a shoulder bag for the flight, mine is fiorelli bag that meats the size for the smaller bag but fits my laptop one side, book, water bottle and make clear bag the other and a zip up centre pouch for passport etc. if I need more hand luggage (rare) I have a medicine bag style soft leather bag that has poppers that attach to the handle of my main suitcase for transport then a long strap for at the airport
