PT NHS leave entitlement

I work 22.5hrs a week, Mon-Wed.

My friend works 22.5hrs also, but Tue-Thurs.

Given that all BHs are Mon or Fri, should we get the same entitlement?

Not all bank holidays are Fridays or Mondays! Christmas and New Year can be any day of the week!!!

I worked 80% and was entitled to 80% of the bank holiday hours. I worked mon-Thursday but wasn’t automatically given the whole day off on Monday if it was a bank holiday. I added up all the hours for each bank holiday, calculated 80% then had to request them off (even if place of work was closed) so hours were taken away from my total annual leave in that way.

it seems a fair way to approach part time workers who work on different days of the week.

What should happen is you both get 0.6 your annual eave entitlement, plus 0.6 bank holidays - this gives total leave for the year.

Then you take the bank holidays out your leave entitlement before you start (giving less leave you can choose but the same amount of leave) and so does she. She'll end up with more leave left over because fewer of her working days will be used by bank holidays. You'll both work the same number of days in total in a year this way.

Oh that should say 0.6x and then 0.6x instead of the bold (I used a * for a times sign)

You’ll have the same statutory leave entitlement, but as your mate doesn’t work Mondays, she won’t be using that leave for any holidays that fall on her non working days.

She’ll be able to use those hours at a different point in the year.

Just one of the considerations part timers should think about while picking their working days!

This, and it’s why you should never work Mondays in a part time job in the NHS

You will get the same number if hours of leave. However if your business is closed on bank holidays and you usually work on that day then you will be forced to use some of your leave entitlement for that day.

HisOliveTree · 29/05/2023 13:35

Your should receive your AL and BH entitlement in hours. Your BH hours will be identical, your friends won't have any hours taken from her entitlement for bank holidays falling on her days off, neither will you. Because more bank holidays fall on a Monday, and she doesn't work that day, her bank holiday entitlement stays in her holiday 'pot' for those days, so she can take those hours when she chooses.

TroysMammy · 29/05/2023 14:16

Not if you work in my place. I don't work Mondays but my colleague does and I've given up trying to get things put right. We work the same number of hours, get the same number of annual leave but she gets the Monday/Tuesday bank holidays in addition.

No one can see this is wrong or more likely not willing to rectify this but you can bet your bottom dollar that when Christmas and New Year are on Thursday and Friday, which are the days I work, I'll have them taken out of my holiday entitlement.

peacelemon · 29/05/2023 14:17

No. If your friend doesn't work Monday they should be given pro rata time off in lieu

TroysMammy · 29/05/2023 14:18

@Fordian do you work in a hospital or GP surgery?
