Can I get enough nutrients if i have to cut down veg?

I have IBS, mostly pain and discomfort. I have had this for 30 years but it has doubled down and become more difficult in the past 10.

With my Dr, I have omitted certain foods to attempt to determine allergies or issues and had no joy. It seems that for me, anything in moderation is ok.

However! I love vegetables! And in this age of veg obsession and copious availability I have gone wild with the cooking! I just love to create healthy recipes and veg is my favourite part of most meals. Usually I have a lot of veg, small amount of carb and a serving of protein. It's all pretty delicious and healthy but the bloating and gas and discomfort get worse the more I cook.

In the past month I experimented by cutting the veg right down. SO on one day I might have a cheese and ham toastie with a small salad. On another some salmon with rice and a small salad. My guts have been really quiet and happy.

Can I go forward with this? My 'small' salad consists of some green leaves, salad onion, tomato and olives, sometimes sweet pepper.
I love cooking with tons of heated veg but it would seem it might be my culprit.
Will I get enough vitamins from salad as opposed to mixed veg? Looking back my thirties were relatively IBS free and this coincided with me only eating salad with my meals as opposed to cooked veggies.

Have you tried cutting certain vegetables out? The gassy, green ones?

Can you eat fruit?

I think you can certainly survive on limited veg if you take vitamins and eat healthily.

Im ok with small amounts of fruit, usually have pear or blueberries with yoghurt for supper.

I think it is the complexity - my gut doesnt like it! So i could have broccoli and green beans with mackerel, but not a loaded broth, if you see what I mean.

I feel that my gut is happy when it isnt complex and very mixed.

I think you have to go with what your gut is happy with.
No point in eating healthy veg if they make you bloated, gassy etc..
Eat what makes you comfortable and take extra vitamins if necessary.

As per pp, I'd definitely try honing down on what triggers you and cut those out. I've realised my main triggers were onions, mushrooms and spinach so no longer eat those at all, and try to have a varied diet of other veg. Sometimes it'll flare up for no discernable reason but it's loads better than it was. Keep going with a food diary until you can pinpoint what's good for you and what isn't, and be specific.

Thanks!
Am keeping a list of observations.

I think it's the variety that kills me. Just two or three different ingredients don't seem to harm me, so I can definitely still eat broccoli and other IBS related foods.
I just need to cut it all right down, to maybe a few.
Cold salad ingredients never harm me though, it is like the warmed mixed veg variety are the problem.

I've had lots of digestive/bowel problems, including Diverticulitis, in the past. For the past few months I’ve been following a modified Keto diet - the Fast 800 one, which mainly consists of a protein source (salmon, chicken etc) accompanied by a couple of non-starchy vegetables, or small salad. The improvement in my symptoms has been amazing, and I feel much better in my self, so I would say you should be fine. Maybe take a multivitamin if you are concerned about not getting enough nutrients?

I do take vitamin supplement but would never do keto, I love my healthy wholegrain carbs and on an exclusion diet i felt horrific, especially mentially, it was as if my brain was starved. I only eat small portions of wholegrain carbs but will never, ever cut them down again.

Oh, that’s a shame! We’re all different and our bodies react differently, and obviously keto is no good for you. However, I think that the point remains that it is perfectly viable to cut down your vegetable intake, it certainly hasn’t done me any harm, and has really helped my guts. Prior to this I had absolutely loved eating lots of vegetables at every meal, but I think that they were the culprits causing havoc with my digestion. My current diet doesn’t sound too different to yours, as I said, it is definitely modified from keto and I do eat whole grain rice, porridge and some fruits and vegetables. Good luck any way.

I agree with that, we do sound similar. I tried very low carb for years but no difference, and oddly enough it seems to sooth my gut. I do keep it sensible though! I think it's about simplicity for me, and my natural appetite loves complexity! It's a shame but not much I can do about it. Just want to get enough nutrients.

Tonight I will be cooking chicken, rice and salad, maybe i ought to research which cols salad options are most nutritious - i do love spinach!
