High on Nurofen

I am SO ill! I have the most horrendous sore throat, the pain is indescribable.

I drank Lemsip throughout the day which made zero difference. I eventually got a bit of relief having Lemsip + Nurofen + throat spray all at once. It still hurt, but I could at least swallow my saliva without crying.

I thought I'd be OK once asleep but it's been really restless so far and I've been having nurofen every 2 to 3 hours.

Is it really bad? I never usually take medicine so I hate that I'm having so much but I don't know what else to do :(

You need to call 111 - you're taking too much and that level of pain could be an infection. Good luck hope you get this sorted soon!

Aren't Nurofen and Lemsip different active ingredients? If so, you can feasibly take them together.

I'd still check.

Takingtheurine · 27/05/2023 03:50

Thank you for the reality check. For some reason I thought you could take it every 4 hours so 3 would be fine but it actually says 6 to 8 hours. I will stop now.

I also have a bad headache and muscle pain. Why does this always happen at the weekend....

That’s far too much. You’re only meant to have 3 doses of ibuprofen in 24 hours. It won’t make you “high”, you’re at risk of adverse effects if you take that much.

Yes, Lemsip contains paracetamol and Nurofen is ibuprofen. You can take them at the same time, but you mustn’t exceed the maximum number of doses of each in 24 hours.

Sounds like it could be flu with those symptoms.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 27/05/2023 03:57

You can stagger them too, so if it says to take them every four hours, take the paracetamol and then the ibuprofen 2 hours later. That way you’ve always got the benefit of one of them and not both wearing off at the same time.

Takingtheurine · 27/05/2023 04:00

Yes flu might be possible as it came on so suddenly. I woke last night with the sore throat and have been bed bound (but unable to sleep) all day.

I just checked and I'm actually having baby Nurofen (as that's all we have) and the amount I have been having is OK every 4 hours. So I have been having more than I should, but not massively so, phew.

Let's hope I get a chunk of sleep before morning.

Google Quinsy, I had it last year and had to be hospitalised.

Google Quinsy, I had it last year and had to be hospitalised.

Me too, earlier this year, ended up on IV antibiotics, steroids and pain relief. Worst pain I've ever had, nurofen and cocodamol weren't even touching it.

Rina66 · 27/05/2023 06:15

Me too, same treatment - the IV steroids are amazing aren't they @SuperDuperJezebel?

Quinsy can be very dangerous, your throat can close up, so don't be a martyr, I'd left mine too long and it's so much harder to treat, also being unable to swallow, leaves you very dehydrated which presents a whole host of other problems when they are trying to cannulise you for the IV drugs.

100% similar experience - down to the struggles to get the IV in because I was so dehydrated they had to use an ultrasound to find a vein.

I honestly thought they'd think I was silly going to A&E/MIU but they took it very seriously, I was having an ECG within 5 minutes of arriving because my heart rate was so high from the dehydration and they began treatment really quickly. If you're really struggling with this much pain @Takingtheurine I would definitely consider being seen.

PossiblyNotOne · 27/05/2023 06:47

Instead of baby nurofen and lemsip actually take some proper effective pain relief.

Get rid of the lemsip (some contain paracetamol) and get some paracetamol and nurofen from the shop, drink lemon and honey. You can still use the difflam.

Takingtheurine · 27/05/2023 07:38

@Rina66 @SuperDuperJezebel that sounds awful! I had bacterial tonsillitis a few years ago and the pain was similar to what I feel now. When I eventually saw an OoO doctor, he only took one look at my throat and prescribed antibiotics. He couldn't believe I'd been putting up with it for days.

I've been looking at my throat though and my tonsils seem OK. The pain seems a bit more manageable this morning too so fingers crossed this is the beginning of feeling better.
