Do you work in a Catholic primary school?

And of so does it employ any non Catholic teachers?
Dd is loving her placement in a VA Catholic primary and has done very well there. SHE notes that all the regular staff ( some of whom are leaving) are practising catholics and wonders in practice if other denominations are ever hired

I dont work in one but did do teacher training and you need your RE certificate (which can be done separately at a cost) in order to be employeed by Catholic primary (in NI at least). This is not the case for secondary as they have designated RE teachers.

I am not sure if it is the same for the rest of the UK. Link for NI www.ccmsschools.com/Page/Certificate-in-Religious-Studies/52940/Index.html

I can't comment on the Catholic thing but I did get feedback when I was hunting for my first teaching job that I looked very young. Not much she can do about it though.

Catholic primary schools in England do not require staff to be Catholic. Some (poss all, don't know) want the head/deputy to be Catholic.

Found a link for England and Wales. Imagine Scotland is the same. www.brs-ccrs.org.uk/index.php/faqs

Don't need to be Catholic but do require this course to show basic understanding of the religion as it is a Catholic school. Age and look won't matter at all! Hope this helps and good luck to your daughter. Tell her to have a word with the principal as well. Always love to hear someone is keen to teach at the school. Less likely to have a high turn over of staff then.

I DO work in an English Catholic primary.

Our school requires head and deputy to be practicing catholics. That's in the constitution/policy etc.
That's the only requirement.
But staff of any denomination have to do prayers, mass, etc. Basically, don't have to BE Catholic, but have to facilitate the ethos

UsingChangeofName · 27/05/2023 00:41

I'm not Catholic, and was offered a job in a Catholic school once. They expected you to support the ethos of the school (I guess you wouldn't apply if you didn't), but you didn't have to be Catholic to be employed there.
I was also asked to apply for a job in a Jewish school once, (I'm not Jewish) and the same applied.
In reality, it is going to depend a lot on who else applies and what any non-Catholic applicant has to offer that would make them a 'better fit' for the job than an equally good teacher who is also Catholic.

What she looks like is irrelevant.

I’m Catholic and work in a Catholic school, only the Head and Deputy have to be Catholic. Other staff are expected to uphold the Catholic ethos of the school, but do not have to be of any particular faith.

Scorchio84 · 27/05/2023 02:10

I do & no you don't have to be a Catholic, in fact it never even gets discussed in the interview but this is in Ireland so can't speak for UK schools

Epicstorm · 27/05/2023 02:34

I worked for years in a Catholic primary. The job specification asked for a Catholic or someone familiar with and sympathetic to the Catholic ethos. I’m not Catholic and quite a few of the other members of staff weren’t either. I think in the current climate schools would struggle if they could only employ Catholics.

My daughter goes to a Catholic secondary school and not all of the teachers are Catholic for what its worth, including the Head Teacher ( Who was also previously the Head of her Catholic infant school ) Unless shes suddenly turned to god in the past few years 🙏😆
