Most important things about your kitchen?

Just wondered what people feel is the most important thing about their kitchen? Could be a particular appliance or a way that a certain space is used… looking for inspiration!

Colourful backsplash. Can't stand plain white kitchens I feel like I'm in a hospital

Do you actually know people with white kitchens?

My mind is boggling.

Vitriolinsanity · 26/05/2023 21:05

DM has a white kitchen. I am a disappointment to herGrin

I have 4 lights hanging over my island. Dcat sunbathes there.

Why though ? Neutral colours then just change the cheaper things for colour

A massive American style fridge. Bought in despair during Covid when having to shop for extended family and couldn’t squeeze everything into regular fridge to store before delivering. Will never have a small fridge again…!

We have a tiny kitchen, no dishwasher, not enough storage but the most amazing view over the sea. I wouldn’t swap for all of the dishwashers, storage, kitchen islands in the world. I dance around listening to music while cooking and watch the waves crashing in!

Oh yes - I can completely see the logic of being able to change 'moveable' things - though I am not sure what those things might be. I just can't imagine a completely white kitchen. Would that mean all the cupboard doors, walls etc were white?

betsyannegrey · 26/05/2023 21:18

I have a white kitchen, and pale pink walls, I absolutely love it.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 26/05/2023 21:21

The sheer size of it I think. I’m very lucky.
I have 24 kitchen drawers of varying sizes! Grin Two ovens, a drinks fridge, and a lovely breakfast bar island. Only thing I would change is the gloss floor.

Argar · 26/05/2023 21:29

I wouldn't swap my crazy Aga-dominated kitchen for anything - but 24 drawers would almost be worth it. @AmazingBouncingFerret

Light and bright
Integrated bin
No island!

I mean the ones with white EVERYTHING, like the ones in celebrity houses that are larger than my whole house but with no life

Sounds lovely! I was more referring to the millionaire modern kitchens

BCBird · 26/05/2023 22:26

Kitchen is awful but I haven't got thr funds or inclination to do anything about it. Love the fact csn get table and chairs in there, but my favourite utensil is my silicone spatulađŸ™‚

weegiemum · 26/05/2023 22:31

The island, where everyone gathers with drinks etc while waiting for dinner to be ready.

Also the dining table, we left room when we extended for a table that can seat between 8 and 12, where we've had so many fabulous meals.

Sounds horrid. I don't know any celebrities, but I don't think my idea of a nice kitchen would coincide with theirs if that's the case.

mondaytosunday · 26/05/2023 23:17

Boiling water tap.

Theoldwoman · 26/05/2023 23:20

The minimal amount of dishes and appliances.

The only thing that stays on the bench top is the kettle. Cleaning up is so easy.

nobodygoesdowninthejungle · 26/05/2023 23:26

Bins! We have four different bin collections and four different areas in the kitchen, one for each bin. One pull out bin which is divided into two sections. And then two crates which are in a cupboard. It makes doing all of the recycling straightforward and means we don't have to go out to the outside bins when it's raining or anything

Only drawers, no cupboards. We have 2 tall larder units with drawers inside.

No wall cupboards, really makes the room feel bigger, and less 'kitchen-y'

Long shelf over the worktop with pretty china, granny's silver and lots of plants.

Long bench seat with a 'skirt', lots of storage hidden underneath

Our island is a vintage Italian bakers table with a marble top. Probably my best vintage find ever!

Vintage chandelier over the table.

This sounds so beautiful!

Cynderella · 26/05/2023 23:38

I had a fab kitchen and then moved. No kitchen for over ten years. Got round to it, and best things have been mentioned:

Quooker Cube - used all the time.
Drawers instead of cupboards under worktops and a tall larder with pull out drawers.
Plenty of sockets.
Bins in a drawer - rubbish, recycling and peelings etc for compost out of sight.
Pull out tap to rinse sink, wash rice, veg etc

Not worth it ... considered expensive worktops, but settled on laminate, so we could afford the Quooker. Happy with that.

We bought a range cooker before having the kitchen done. There are times I use both ovens. Don't think I've ever used all gas rings. I think I would rather have more drawers and a built in oven, maybe two and a four burner hob.

Dishwasher - have downsized from household of seven to four, and I think we may not need a dishwasher any more. Really useful when doing a lot of cooking, but 75% of the time, I could easily just wash up in the sink. Dishwasher not heating water today, so I may be testing that thesis over next week or two.

stayathomer · 26/05/2023 23:43

When we moved in we only had a shell of a kitchen- previous owners had taken it all except an old oven. We went to a kitchen guy and he talked me into an island for counter space which I’m now so grateful for plus it has cupboards in the island which again I appreciate as we would have had such a tiny space to put things in. The best things are a Guinness plate thing that you can put eg a hot saucepan on, and then in ikea we got a thing for you to just stick your knives into.

echt · 26/05/2023 23:50

The view from the large corner window that overlooks the whole street's gardens making a vista of trees going downhill. The view from the other kitchen windows - full length, that give on to my front garden.

Pallisers · 26/05/2023 23:51

I love nearly everything about my kitchen (redid it in 2016). Top ones are:

Walk in pantry with countertop, full cupboard, shelves, undercounter cupboards and a pocket door that closes so I can have all the appliances etc in there on the counter but not have them seen from the kitchen

hidden bins

Pull out tap (these are pretty standard in the US so I've never not had one, but I've often wondered why they aren't standard everywhere else as they are so handy)

the most beautiful granite countertops in the world :)

2 ovens.

Lovely sparkly lights - no industrial chic for me - over the lovely granite on my island (although that italian bakers table and chandelier sound fab)

What I wish I had done is:

Warming drawer - I should have sacrificed a regular drawer for that
Flat long spice drawer rather than the narrow one I have.
