Joiner rescheduled an hour before coming

I was expecting a joiner at 9.30 this morning to carry out a piece of work which would take about 5-6 hours. I've cleared the place and moved the cat to another room with her things to make room

Weirdly I had this feeling he was going to cancel last night, no idea why! So he messaged an hour before this morning saying his vehicle won't start and he needs to get it fixed, so can he come on Tuesday instead

I have this feeling like it's a lie. He's offered the best price of everyone I quoted, but is this a big red flag? This is my first home so not used to dealing with people working on the house etc

the thing with people like this, is that they believe we are all as stupid as they are... What's the bet for tomorrow? Dodgy stomach? Stress from worrying about his mum? Can't find the house key? Dog ate the house key? He's got a dodgy stomach from eating the dog that ate the house key because he was stressed about his mum?

Did the door to her home sauna stick (maybe he made it for her) fucking freezing here today so heat exhaustion must be a lie!

If you apply for quotes on My Builder website only workmen actually keen and available to take on work will place bids. They will be genuine as they also have to pay for the bids. You also leave a review as a satisfied customer so they have no choice but to do a good job!

janeseymour78 · 30/05/2023 15:57

Actually @Madamecastafiore he wrote an essay about how shed been cutting her grass when it happened even though he had told her not to etc...I'd be trying myself in knots if I had to come up with this many lies on a regular basis!

I am honestly considering learning a trade - I do a good job and always turn up on time. I’m just a bit bored of working in an office.

IglesiasPiggl · 30/05/2023 15:58

I would reply along the lines of "sorry you're having such a run of bad luck. Don't worry about the job, I'll get someone else in". I can't be doing with endless cancellations and the ridiculous excuses that accompany them.

LlynTegid · 30/05/2023 16:28

No third chance. Cancel now.

Muncha · 30/05/2023 18:08

Nope. Cancel now

Ask around the neighbours, local gossip girls facebook page for recommendations and when you contact them - say so & so recommended them.

I've found you have to contact at least 3 tradesmen before you get any job done -
they don't respond to initial contact
they respond, agree a date to visit for a quote.
they don't turn up
or if they do turn up, you never receive quote / they disappear off the planet
agree date - at least 2 false starts
they start and then don't turn up one day

you get my drift. Never assume you will have the work finished when you need it finished.

janeseymour78 · 30/05/2023 19:22

@DPotter i actually found this guy from my local Facebook group. Two people recommended him - probably his mum and sister 😉

Anyway I've told him to leave it now. A relative is going to see if their joiner can help. Otherwise it's back to the drawing board. It's pretty stressful!

Yep @momtoboys he was messaging from the hospital where she'd been admitted for heat exhaustion...

Heat exhaustion? It’s 20 degrees…

DPotter · 30/05/2023 19:29

I know just how you feel!

Zippedydoo123 · 31/05/2023 07:23

Other than My Builder website you can look on Spotted on facebook for local recommendations or you can place your own query. Eg Spotted Ilfracombe Spotted Nottingham etc. It must be local to where u live. It is a really useful Facebook page in your neighbourhood. Can recommend.

janeseymour78 · 31/05/2023 07:52

Ok thanks @Zippedydoo123 Ill have a look for more Facebook groups like that.

After I told the joiner to just leave it he said 'no worries but if I did show up this week would someone let me in?'

Um no? Hopefully the next person I find is better!
