Pushchair with space for a dog?

Ok, I know I might sound bonkers so I've name changed for this!

I have a 15m toddler and I have a small dog 8kg.
I'm a lone parent and I need to take the dog and the child out and about together obviously otherwise the dog doesn't get a walk.

I was hoping to get some advice about which pushchairs/strollers might have a large enough basket for the dog to pop in for short periods (eg walking through town to get to the park) so I don't have to wrangle both of them and a pushchair.

My dog is very good - but doesn't walk to heel properly (she's a rescue and I've never been able to crack that one!) so actually it's easier if she's in the basket (I'm pretty sure she'll stay there once in).

Has anyone else attempted this?

I haven't tried it, but my 5kg dog could definitely fit in my icandy peach basket. I think the weight limit is 10kg. The icandy peach has adaptors which means the seat can be higher up, I still use them (DD is 2.5) because I'm tall and feel less lanky having DD that bit higher up.

The weight limit of the basket might be what you need to watch. And also if you go up and down kerbs that you don't bump the dog out, definitely keep hold of the lead!

The Vista (or Cruz) both have a weight limit of about 13kg, and the basket is easily accessible.

I have an icandy orange also and the basket is huge

I got a 2nd hand mountain buggy duo off Ebay and the dog sat in the spare seat So comfortably he refused to walk until we go rid of the buggy.

One other option might be using a baby carrier? I used to have one that worked like a backpack with a frame and it worked fine until the kids were bigger. It freed up my hands to manage the dog. Mind you, she was a big dog so even if she would have tolerated it, she'd never have fit in a buggy!

I’ve got a silver cross pioneer and it’s got a massive basket. My old dog (similar size, slightly bigger perhaps) rode around royal Cornwall show all day in it last year very happily.

Uppababy Vista? I’ve seen toddlers ride in the basket so I’m sure a small dog would fit!

Icandy Lime would be ideal for this. My 18month old lies in the basket thinking it's funny

DogsvsCats · 26/05/2023 08:21

Not crazy at all- our collie used to do this if their own accord, so I started putting a blanket in there to make it more comfy and got buggy clips so I could hang my shopping bag!

AintNobodyGonnaStopMyShine · 26/05/2023 08:23

Aww, it would make my day to see this in person. How cute!

FlounderingFruitcake · 26/05/2023 11:36

I saw a Yorkie in the basket of a Joolz Aer today! At first I thought it was a toy as the pram was parked up in the playground but then it moved.

SMBCmama · 26/05/2023 11:42

Icandy core! My 7kg dog has decided the basket is his space.

Thanks everyone, I'm going to dripfeed and ask if another feature is possible if that's ok?

I'm adopting the 18m and so I would also like to have her facing me for a few weeks as we get to know each other and I can do I can chat to her more easily and have eye contact etc. (this is also why I have no idea about buggies as she'll be my first child).

Are there any pushchairs/buggies that could do that too?

I'll probably be hitting up JL baby dept, but it's good to know if there are any out there that would tick the dog and the facing boxes which possibly they wouldn't stock.

(Sorry my first post said 15m - but they will be 18m when she comes to live with me)

Get a pram with a tray/basket underneath, put a bit of carpet/blanket in the tray/basket.

SMBCmama · 27/05/2023 09:28

@adagent how exciting! In your circumstances I’d consider the new Bugaboo dragonfly. The basket holds up to 10kg and has a removable bag so you could have doggy space. The seat unit faces both ways too. It’s £££ but not as expensive as some of the travel systems which you won’t need so much as no need for carrycot or car seat attachment.

the icandy core can also be bought with just a seat unit and you can rise the seat too. This is what I do when my dog is having a ride in the basket.

Both can be folded without removing the seat (although the dragonfly looks easier)

Thanks @SMBCmama

The dragonfly one looks great, but the wheels look a bit thin, I'm hoping to find one that's good for off-road paths as much as city walking.

I was thinking I should get a jogger so I can go running, but realistically I really don't think I'll ever do that!

Uppababy Vista all the way - huge basket (we put our dog in when we go into shops, she loves it!) and the seat is changeable front or parent facing. I really appreciate that the seat is quite high up on the frame, so you really have more level eye-contact/communication. Wheels are fairly big, too - pretty rugged all around. Great pushchair!

spottygymbag · 27/05/2023 10:56

I have a mountain buggy terrain and our 7kg dog would happily ride in the basket. Especially when it was cold and a bit a rainy.
