Crudités

The recent fruit and veg threads have got me thinking. I really don't remember eating crudités much as a child! I recall occasionally having a platter with dips at bbqs or being given the odd raw carrot but they weren't an every day thing as they are today. Don't get me wrong we ate plenty of veg and salad just not cut into sticks! Today they are a go to snack or side. I eat them most days, they are at kids parties, in lunch boxes or on children's menu's. It just seem strange, obviously carrots and cucumber are nothing new but I swear cutting them in sticks has grown in popularity!

I grew up in the 80s eating them. Also used to have ‘ants on a log’ (celery with peanut butter and raisins). And a fantastic one 😂 (I think this was just my family) carrot sticks dipped in sugar were a regular favourite! I had a lot of dental issues as a child and I can’t help but think that - and all the sugary coke - may be why.

Cheese and pineapple on a stick
Cocktail sausages
Mini sausage rolls
Mini pizzas

Picky bits aka the British Mezze crudités makes it sound posh and wanky but it's the same stuff

And yes raw vegetables were on our party tables in the 80s! We just avoided eating them

We always had them, it was my favourite lunch! Late 80s early/90s

Yes, you're right.

We used to eat raw carrots without cutting them up etc

Bit then we used to eat utter fucking shite, like crisps, sweets and cakes every day. Squash with E numbers.in them etc. Must have been bouncing off the walls lol.

Fairly sure my mum didn't have the time or patience or inclination to cut up carrots for 3 kids whilst working full time and running the house!

My niece is 3 and eats a red pepper like an apple ha ha

But none of those items are crudités!

I don't remember eating crudités as a child. Like you OP, the odd carrot but never batons.

I think part of the difference was that things to dip crudités in weren’t as normal back then — to pick only one example, hummus is pretty much its own food group in this house these days, and DS eats a lot of it, but I’m pretty sure I didn’t even know what it was until my student days (early 90s).
